a clunker that broke down on the 101.

Side note... something that i've wondered about or a while... In L.A., a freeway is typically referred to in the manner above, e.g., "There's a heavy traffic on THE 101," or "THE 5," "THE 10," etc.

In Northern California, someone would say, "There's a heavy traffic on 101," or "Highway 101," but not "the 101."

Is L.A.'s format ("the" + number) popular throughout the country? Do people on the east coast talk about "THE 95," or do they say, "95," "I 95," "Interstate 95" etc?

Real Southern Californian's still say, "the San Diego to the Golden State but never use the Long Beach or the Harbor".

"THE 95,"

Only in movies and tv written by Socal types.

Bothered the heck out of me when in an "The X-Files" epi, Mulder - a Beltway-raised and Eli-educated-just-off-of-[I]95 character said "...traffic on the 95...".

In NY/NJ/CT we say traffic is bad on 287 or accident on 495. In NYC though, the hiway names are used, or more often initials. Accident on the eastbound LIE backs up to traffic to the BQE. LIE being Long Island Expressway, BQE= Brooklyn Queens Expressway LIE=I 495 BQE=I 278

I was born and raised in SoCal and that’s just always been the way freeways are referred to.

The 101, the 405, etc.

New York has “the BQE, the Gowanus, the FDR,” etc. so it is found elsewhere.

In the Northeast it’s usually just the number or a familiar name for the highway: “Take 95 to 91” or “684 to 84 to the Mass Pike”. A lot of it is very local, as in NJ you would never call the New Jersey Turnpike anything but “the New Jersey Turnpike” or “the Turnpike.”

Chickensoup to Deaf Smith
Me: Sorry, we have no roads or highways in Texas called ‘The’.

You need to loose that Kalifornee speak before you cross that Red into OK.

really?

We have The Airline up ta Aroostook county

The Plains Road is down a piece.

The Cat Mosum Road is pretty well known in these parts, too.

We have lots of The roads with “The.” Most of the roads say what town they are heading to: The Portland Road, The Standish Road....
