To: a little elbow grease

Hungary is serious about curbing illegal immigration. We give it lip service, not much else, even under Trump.

Back in the 60’s, I had a fencing match referred by a famous Hungarian coach and Olympian named Calabrese, his first such referring job in America.

Can I call him the first Hungarian “fencer”? /sarc

[Just thought I’d add a little spice (Paprika) to this conversation.

However, I was visiting Pleiku City in the Central Highlands of So. Vietnam on Nov. 1, 1970. Our American military host was 1st Lt. Steve Klimko, an adviser to the SVN PSDF (People’s Self Defense Force, SVNese volunteers who did guard duty at night as an internal line of security around a city, town, village, etc). (I have my VN journal in front of me).

For VN guys, he talked about “KITS” (Key Inter-Teams, possibly Interdiction Teams), who were “hardcored PSDF Combat Teams, 35 men, 6 weeks of training”. “KITS relieve PSDF from hamlet, 40m - 200m; 198 KITS in this Province; Eventually PF’s will move away (PF - Popular Forces).

The 40m - 200 m is probably their operational guard range from a point 40m (120 ft from a village/hamlet) outward to a range of 200m, about 600 feet. Normally would be a concentric circles as PFs came next in the circular outer ring defense method, followed by the RFs (Regional Forces) who ranged out anywhere from several miles to dozens of miles or more. They were the ones who engaged main force VC units until regular ARVN forces could come in.

When I asked him why he was fighting in Vietnam he said that as a child, he and his family had to flee the communist reinvaders of Hungary during the Revolution of 1956.

By helping another people resist communism, he was repaying America for taking them in as refugees.

I never forget this man. Typical refugee-then American citizen who understood more about the threat of communism to free people than many Americans did in the 1960’s/70, and then did something to stop it.

[This is the first time in 50 years I’ve written extensively from my work/journalist notebook. I’m so glad I could find Klimko’s name and could put it in print. He’s the kind of refugee who makes America great and helps to protect it].
