U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh on Thursday sided with liberal justices in a ruling that delayed the execution of a cop killer amid claims that religious freedom would be violated if the death-row inmate's Buddhist spiritual adviser wasnt present during his final moments.
The nation's highest court blocked the execution of Patrick Murphy about two hours after he could have been executed. Murphy is a member of the Texas 7 gang of escaped prisoners who are awaiting the death penalty over the fatal shooting of a suburban Dallas police officer.
Murphy's attorney argued that Texas prison officials were violating his client's First Amendment right to freedom of religion by preventing the inmates spiritual adviser, a Buddhist priest, from witnessing the execution.

So the libs were wrong about this guy...again. And the administration was wrong about him as well. You simply can’t trust lawyers or judges.
Ehh - I don’t necessarily see this as bad. If muslims and christains get their spiritual advisors with them at the time of death than so should other religions with proper vetting.
You know who called this? Levin.
He went right to the heart of his district ruling on Obamacare and how he lined up with Robert’s view, that it was a tax and not an imposition of gov’t on the individual.
He’s Roberts’ right hand now. Trump must choose more wisely if he gets to replace RBG.
The Bushs, the virus is alive and spreading.
I agree. Rulings for religious freedoms is a good thing.
Yeah is there something i’m missing?
What’s the big deal about having this guy there?
The same end result will happen.
That’s what matters.
Let his Buddist advisor be present. I agree. Delayed the execution two hours. Big whoop.
Looks to me like FOX News is trying to gin up a game if lets-you-and-him-fight.
I say we don’t oblige.
I don’t see this as a big deal, but I’m sure the doom and gloom FReepers will.
So, find the guy a monk and then fry him. Next case
Place the Buddhist priest into the procedure and then execute the criminal. Case Closed.
From reading the entire article it appears this was a 7 - 2 decision and not a 5 - 4 one.
It mentions gorsuch and Thomas voting for allowing the execution to proceed, but doesn’t give a final vote talley.
“I dont see this as a big deal, but Im sure the doom and gloom FReepers will.”
I’m with you. Kavenaugh is doing fine, maybe not perfect on every vote, but he’s doing fine - other Republicans have nominated MUCH WORSE people. All this says to me is that we need Trump to replace RGB and hopefully one or two other Leftists there. But sometimes I do wonder about the people who launch off against Trump when these things happen.
Which judge is “he”?
If it were my decision, I would have allowed the Buddahist in. I don’t see it as an issue. The important thing is to get the execution done.
Kavanaugh’s background looked more like part of the entitled DC elite than like a grounded conservative. I was hoping what the libs put him through would have him embracing conservative and Constitutional viewpoints.
This ruling allows him to defend the non-stop assault on Christianity moving forward.
Pearl Clutching FReepers need to think a little deeper.
There’s a link in the article to another article where the 2 new justices have had differing votes on other issues. Sometimes Gorsuch votes with the conservatives and sometimes Kavanaugh does.
It seems to me the President has picked justices who look at the facts of the case and compare it against the constitution instead of simply voting what advances their ideology.
In my opinion that’s a good thing.
I don’t necessarily see this as bad either.
If Kavanaugh is going to show extreme deference for people’s First Amendment religious rights, then he is going to be on the right side of Christian Bakery cases going forward.
They’ll find a Buddhist priest to come see the guy and then they’’ fry him.
Did he give the cop the opportunity to have his religious representative there for his execution?
