One year, I displayed boats at the New York Boat Show for my friends. I plugged in my computer, but the Electrical Union told me to remove my plug from the outlet and tell them that I want my computer plugged in. They did after 3 hours and $35 that I had to pay.
Never went back to the NY Boat Show...
A local business here sets creates and builds the booths for conventions all across the country.
The owner was telling me why they will never work in NYC again.
Their truck backs up to the dock with a roll of carpet.
One unions member unloads carpet at places it on the dock
A different union member loads it on a cart.
A teamster has to take it to the site in the arena
Only union members can lay the carpet.
And, as you say, don’t even THINK about touching an extension cord
4 Carpenters taking a 20 minute coffee break before picking up the first board @$50/hr each
All getting a mandatory minimum on their timecard
On Sunday, when most trade shows close up and move out, the pay is now double and triple time.
“I plugged in my computer, but the Electrical Union told me to remove my plug from the outlet and tell them that I want my computer plugged in. “”
Same kind of union crap at McCormick place in Chicago.
