What the Finns did was supremely heroic and thought impossible, but the Finns don’t think it can be done any more. The accuracy of the artillery and air bombardment just to start, but then coming to how a Soviet tanks of that era could be disabled by a man jumping out of a hole, sticking a log between the tracks and then throwing a Molotov cocktail. Great scene showing it in the new Tuntematon Sotilas movie.

I don’t know how to make link on a phone, but Google - tuntematon sotilas tankki molotov - and select videos if you want to see it. This can’t be done any more.

None of our business. I think that would be a splendid thing for the proposed EU army to concern themselves with.

Actually, if the items you mentioned aren’t maintained they become junk surprisingly quickly.

“This can’t be done any more.”

I’m really glad you weren’t around in 1776.

“...the USSR, which went away in the early 1990s...”

It never ‘went away’.

It simply regrouped.

“Swiss model of a large conscript infantry works only in Switzerland.”

In the lead up to the US Civil War both Britain and France were contemplating their options with regards to invading and conquering the United States. The author Peter G. Tsouras did quite a bit of research on this.

When the US and CS mobilized millions of men in a very short time and then equipped them and sent them to war the whole thing stunned the Europeans who did not believe that a mostly agrarian nation could transform itself so quickly.

After the war when the US threatened France over their invasion and effective annexation of Mexico the French military blanched at the realization that Mexico was wholly untenable against a nation that still had millions of experienced combat veterans.

The Swiss model would still work here and inculcating generations of young men with military traditions and instilling in them the eternal values of manhood would go a long way to restoring our culture.

No, it pretty much went away. Ever seen the pictures of the old Soviet tanks rusting in Ukraine?

Kind of like those bands that get back together, but with only one original member.

The armies of that time were different. If you put infantry against mechanized and artillery brigades on plains today they’ll have no chance. What good is your rifle when the rocket assisted artillery can land shells accurately 20 miles away and there are fast moving armor with sensors seeing you from far and cannons cutting you easily at half protected enough to shrug off the rifle rounds like sand pebbles.

We’ve been fighting in Afghanistan for sixteen years against people who are armed mostly with handmade weapons.

FYI: We’re not winning.

1. The deaths there are rounding error of what Russians would accept (their people would never know anyway)

2. The deaths come from policing mission with humane means. Russians wouldn’t be humane in their police mission.

4. Accepting previous - before taking up the policing there was destroying their army in Iraq. Shock and Awe and wasn’t just infantry ... it was near-late Soviet gear.

4. Afghanistan has mountains and ISAF never did indistrinct cruwlity Soviets would

I have read about it, but I am not an expert so maybe that is why I can’t explain that well. I’ll give one more try. You have a small group of riflemen and the enemy has just two vwichles. One fast APC and one tank. Your rifles hurt neither of them and there is no terrain to save you. If you run the APC is faster and kills you. If you barricade the tank just blows it up. Very few places to ambush either with a rocket on plains.

Now on mountains you just stay behind a ridge, shoot a rocket once either is close enough and escape through paths that can only be traversed on foot. Now they have no chance.

This is where Pat goes back to being Pat. Somehow he turns Russia’s victims, the Ukraine, Georgia, the Baltics, into the bad guys.

Yes, so while we should tell Western Europe to pound sand, I would be fearful for Poland, Estonia, ect. These guys are next in the dominoes to fall before Russia.

Pat would have more credibility if he talked about tossing Turkey, but perhaps his Arabism keeps him from doing so.
