If Trump has his way, this major federal agency is on the way out

The White House is moving to do what no president has accomplished since World War II: eliminate a major federal agency.

If the Trump administration succeeds at dismantling the Office of Personnel Management, the closure could be a blueprint for shuttering other departments as it tries to shrink government.

The agency would be pulled apart and its functions divided among three other departments. An executive order directing parts of the transition by the fall is in the final stages of review, administration officials said, with an announcement by President Trump likely by summer. OPM employees were briefed at a meeting in March.

The GOP won’t go for this. They love big government just as much as the Democrats do.

The GOP won’t even defund PBS for crying out loud so there’s no hope that they will eliminate any federal agencies. They will side with the bureaucrats and the Democrats, not Trump.

So true. In our government we have 535 against 1.
And the 1 has won a lot despite all that.

I can hear the Republicans now...elect us and we’ll downsize the government. Just give us the House.

Yeah, LOL.

Our Coast Guard is part of homeland security/HSA.

We and other members of our family know Coasties, active and retired, who went into HSA.

Most feel good about it.

Merging and reducing government is good if the moves are thought out and meaningful. Odd that there is no discussion of how this improves government and saves money. Without that discussion, I fear it is hapless political BS that will fail.

We heard since the 80s calls to eliminate the Department of Education without clear reason why, improvement, money savings, etc. No surprise it failed. The only success was hack politicians getting votes and elected for promoting unserious proposals.

How about breaking up HUD & have the states run that scam?

Sure is fun to see scammers of Section 8 on Judge Judy & People’s Court. Both judges hammer them.

The big thing would be to consolidate all the various federal welfare programs. As of 2011, there were 79 Programs and $927 Billion in Annual Spending, scattered among dozens of departments.

Just consolidating all the programs and eliminating redundant bureaucracy would probably save a hundred billion dollars.

Requiring a "Real ID" (with biometric ID) in order to apply for benefits would probably save another hundred billion by excluding fraud, ineligibles, and illegals.

Once consolidated, institute a cap on how much total aid any household is allowed to get.

Each department & agency ought to be able to handle its own hiring & staff career management. So I think this is a good move. OPM was not an improvement over the Civil Service Commission. Its been a consistent and stupid myth that one size hire fits all government positions.

The agency would be pulled apart and its functions divided among three other departments.

So it's not really shrinking government--it's just redistributing it.

A *little* progress, but not as much as I was hoping for in a first step.
