Democrat Marie Newman, after spending several months exploring a rematch against Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Ill., on Tuesday made it official and said she would run again for the seat, setting up the biggest Chicago-area congressional 2020 primary.

The 3rd Congressional District race comes in what may well be a different political climate, with Newman’s progressive wing of the party gaining strength. The revolutionaries seek to scalp another Democratic incumbent. Lipinski's sin is that he is moderate and pro-life.

In the 2018 primary, Lipinski defeated Newman by only 2,145 votes, or 51.1 percent to 48.9 percent.

A second challenger is also expected.

“A second challenger is also expected.”

That’s the way it works here in IL. Put another “challenger” on the ballot to siphon votes away from the real challenger. That way The Machine incumbent wins.

a) for all intents and purposes, this is no Republican party in the city proper

b) Lipinski is one of the few donkeys in existence who is reliably pro-life - they will be after his butt forever.

This is a city/suburban district.

It has been twenty-five years since a Republican challenger made a serious showing in this district.

I have always wondered what Newman was up to after Seinfeld went off the air. Guess he came out of the closet and became Marie. Good luck to him or her.

Never going to happen. I vote against him every time. He’s my neighbor lives just down the street from me and it’s the only reason my street is plowed ASAP every winter.

He’s probably the closest thing to an old school type dedmocrat there is...at least in illannoy. “Inherited” his seat from his old man.

The HR5 vote should be an issue 2020 not just in Chicago but in other states where there have been democrat flips of former Republican House seats as well in conservative areas.
