As the fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was finally extinguished, pictures emerged showing the devastation the building experienced. The sky is visible through the roof where the spire once stood, but there is hope that much of the medieval architecture can be saved. One of the colourful rose windows appears to be largely unharmed after valiant efforts aby firefighters.
Just under 400 firefighters tackled the historic blaze through the night, battling to stop it wreaking complete destruction of the treasured facade after flames torched the roof, sending its spire crashing to the ground before crowds of horrified Parisians. Two police officers and one firefighter were injured during the blaze, which saw teams battle to save the structure of the 850-year-old Gothic masterpiece and the priceless artefacts it housed. The tragedy has prompted a global outpouring of support, with leaders pledging to help France rebuild the smouldering ruin. The fire, which broke out as the last crowds of tourists ended visits at around 6pm BST (7pm local time), was finally declared to be fully extinguished more than 12 hours later on Tuesday morning. Speaking in front of the cathedral, junior Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said: The task overnight was to bring the fire under control so it doesnt re-start.
All for a snackbar.
Thanks very much.
You’re right. Several more photos at link!
Not as bad as I thought it would
Apparently the roof was where all the fire was!....................
OMG, I think I see a mooslum terrorist hiding in the rubble.
Hey, he’s got a match.
Notice candles at the altar on the left and right.............................not melted..............
Thanks be to God!
It probably wasn’t mooselimb terrorists because they’d probably be dancing in the streets all over the middle east now.
Notice the candles.................
It's an old tinder box building that was accidentally caught on fire and went down. That's the it of it.
I see holes in the arched ceiling stonework, likely from sections of the roof caving in, yet so may of the stones still in place!! What a testimony to the strength of those stone arches and to the hands that built them. Amazing!!
I hear that even the organ survived!...................
Me too. Likely water damage to some parts but intact. The burning roof burnt upwards and consumed itself, sparing so much of the inside. I am so grateful.
900 year old wood is kindling.........................
Thank goodness.
I’d be upset if mine didn’t!!
It looks much less worse than I feared.
thank God.
How they missed the fire with the first alarm i dont know
I’ll trust NYFD any day of the week
I don’t understand this fascination with the unmelted candles. The fire was three hundred feet away and above. Heat rises.
Exactly.....
survive does not mean usable, workable or even whole.
I dont think they are real candles.
the churches have gone to plastic or glass candle tubes and push a candle up thru the tube.
