It may have accelerated in 2008, but it was already brewing when I was in college in the 70’s. I could see then that the whole free speech movement was a sham, and that they were all about manipulating language to control thought, Orwell style.

... the currency of the Left is you’re even caring about whatever is upsetting them now. If you care, and especially if you give them anything that they want, they only grow MORE demanding, and only get outraged all the easier.
The rational approach to SJWs is to not give a hoot that they’re upset, to not care what offends them, to even go so far as advocating offending them even more (they want a statue down, put another up ... they want a name changed, take back another name already changed).
This. It was a satirical, hyperbolic song about the plight of blacks in the south. It’s no more racist or anti-black than some of Spike Lee’s films. No matter, the leftists don’t care about subtle distinctions. It’s similar to what’s happening in San Francisco’s Washington High School where a WPA-funded commie’s murals are being attacked as racist because their sympathetic depiction of blacks and American Indians is now completely misinterpreted by the leftist philistines.

Embarrassing that the PC police are so obtusely stupid that they couldn’t figure out that this song is a powerful indictment of prejudice and bigotry. Same issue with the third verse of the National Anthem. You can’t fix stupid, but you must oppose it! The truth shall set you free.
