Trump, sons sue to block House Democrats from obtaining his financial records

President Donald Trump is going to court to try to block a Democratically-controlled congressional committee from obtaining his financial records through a subpoena. The lawsuit is the first case where Trump has sued to try to stymie House Democrats' investigations into the President. But the court filing is only the first skirmish in what's likely to be a multi-front war between House Democrats and Trump, the White House and the President's businesses.

Trump and the Trump Organization filed suit Monday to stop the House Oversight Committee -- chaired by Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland -- from obtaining financial records from Mazars, an accounting firm that Trump used to prepare financial statements. The committee subpoenaed for 10 years' worth of Trump's financial records after the firm requested a so-called "friendly subpoena."

They still require a warrant and probable cause.

Un-F’n-Believable!!

Another witch hunt unfolds before the eyes of everyone.

Congress never asked the Clintons for their financial records!! Hell, there was even a best-selling book written about those two crooks that was called Clinton Cash!!!

I doubt that the courts will allow it. If they do, I want to see the financial records of every democrap in congress and the senate!

Are you serious? You don’t know how to find wrongdoing without looking for it? Wow! It goes like this...a crime is committed, then law enforcement investigates to identify the perpetrator(s) and gather evidence. They don’t or are not supposed to just willy nilly decide to investigate in hopes of finding a crime. As for the 4th Amendment, President Trump was a private citizen at the time and his family and business associates are still private citizens. Do you seriously want Congress critters of any stripe to arrogate to themselves the power to investigate their political opponents for no legal reason?

No it isn’t. Law enforcement investigates after wrongdoing occurs and comes to to their attention. They investigate who did it, why, how, when, forensics, etc. They build a case and turn it over to a prosecutor for trial. They don’t just wake up one day, single someone out for no reason, and start investigating every aspect of the target’s life. If you seriously think LE conducts baseless investigations without probable cause that a crime has been committed, you are a sorry individual indeed.

Do you understand that this is financial information from when he was a private citizen, not a government official? Without probably cause, this is the very prototype for why the 4th amendment exists.

Can't even protect yourself from crime.

You can if you can dig a deep hole and not talk about, um, protecting yourself.

There is a distinction between a search warrant which needs probable cause and the Congress doing its over sight function which is political. That said there is the over riding issue of privacy. I believe the S.C. found the privacy right to exist in a similar matter involving over reach by Congress some time ago.

I don’t think they have cart blanche to do so any time they want to anyone they want. There is no probable cause. There is the 4th Amendment.

They do need to tie the request to some legitimate legislative purpose, so they can’t just look at the tax records of anyone for any reason.

Hold up!

You said several posts ago:

“Can’t we just agree some stuff if wrong, even and *especially* when the primary justification is basically “look how bad the other guys are”.”

So, essentially, no excuses for anyone.

NOW you are say:

“The way we think the world should work, is not always the way it does work.”

So you just excuse them with this?

You are a Leftist Troll.

Waiting to see you ride the Valkyrie Kitties lightening bolt!

The IRS’s job is to audit & find problems.
IT is definitely NOT the expertise of Cummings & other Dems.
