Perhaps the most irritating thing about this attack on Kate Smith is that is isn't even true. There is no evidence that she was a racist and plenty of evidence to the contrary.

My feeling is that the corporate suits at the Yankees and the dolts who run the Flyers were becoming more and more uncomfortable with playing "God Bless America." In this age when patriotism is considered not hip, they were just looking for an excuse so that they wouldn't have to play the song anymore.

1.) ‘God Bless America’ the song being performed by anyone, after all Its composer Irving Berlin wrote many “coon songs”.
2.) The National Anthem, after all Francis Scott Key was a slave owner.
3.) The American Flag, after all John Ross, Betsy’s husband was a plantation slave owner.
