Not so fast: Trump's Alaska drilling study slammed by U.S. wildlife regulator

The Trump administration failed to adequately consider oil spills, climate change and the welfare of polar bears in its expedited study of proposed drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, according to comments published by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service this week.

The unusually harsh criticism from federal wildlife regulators could deal a blow to one of the most high-profile items in President Donald Trump’s energy agenda, and reflects the pitfalls of the administration’s drive to speed up big projects with quicker, shorter environmental studies.

The Interior Department wants to hold its first lease sale of at least 400,000 acres in ANWR, America’s largest wildlife sanctuary, later this year, but could face lawsuits if its permitting process is flawed.

The Fish & Wildlife Service said the ANWR Coastal Plain draft environmental impact study (EIS) failed to include oil spill response plans, analyze the effects of climate change on the Arctic, or ensure that surveys of polar bear denning habitats are required.

The Interior subagency also listed dozens of other information gaps in its 59 pages of comments and implied that the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management wrote the study without properly consulting wildlife regulators.

“The Service has managed the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and its resources for several decades and has information and expertise that is valuable in formulating a final EIS that can withstand the scrutiny of legal sufficiency,” the agency’s Alaska director Gregory Sikanie wrote.

The Fish & Wildlife Service declined to provide further comment. The Interior Department said its Bureau of Land Management had received thousands of comments on the draft study, all of which would be considered.

US Fish and Wildlife Service failed to adequately take into consideration that a whole lot of us are sick and tired of their bullcrap and are looking forward to the day when every one of them are out on the street with all their worldly possessions in a shopping cart.

Alaska is nine months of the year frozen freaking tundra

How many of your little precious animals are going to be living in that environment -20

Furthermore the existing pipeline which they have to have warmers for to keep you in the liquid as it flows down to the main United States has millions of pictures of animal sitting right next to it because it’s freaking warm and the rest the environment it’s -20m

It’s just like these idiots he did cry solar panels in the desert and then all the Frecon critters are sitting under the solar panels because there’s shade !!!

IF, IF, IF!!!!! Trump would actually do as he says and fire these idiots, Actually drain the swamp. Appoint department heads he actually agree with him and not just assume they will carry out his wishes as gratitude for being appointed, this would not be a story. Of all the things Trump has tried to do but been stymied, draining the swamp is one area where he cannot be thwarted by congress or stopped by the courts. These agencies should have been drained 2 years ago. The swamp has had an entire generation, 24 years, 92-16 of uninterrupted anti American appointments filling Washington’s agencies. W could care less and his daddy wasn’t all that concerned about conservatism before 92. Time’s running out Trump.

or ensure that surveys of polar bear denning habitats are required.

So it's being held up because the Polar Bears aren't filling out and returning their surveys?

Odd. There are MORE polar bears now than any ever counted in any survey in any year.

Now, most likely the whaler crews and fit traders between 1860 - 1920 did many thousands, but all the recent counts have been increasing since the 60’s.
