It is not advertising that supports facebook. It is their invasive, stealthy taking of user data and selling it to companies who want to use the information for their own enrichment.
Advertising is a mere shadow of the evil perpetuated by Facebook. (I am on the platform - when I want to chat with my wife while I am overseas.)
What Google, YouTube, Facebook, and similar social media platforms should do is provide a feature where users can set their own preferences as to who is blocked within the users’ sphere of activity on the platforms. This would allow the platforms to be self-regulating.
However, in their desire for godlike powers they prefer to hang onto this control. So, they implement burdensome processes that can never filter everything to anyone’s satisfaction.
Because these big companies are accepting responsibility for the content on their platforms, they should become liable for ALL content. If violence or other crimes are committed due to threats or other salacious content, their deep pockets should be accessed in the courts of law to pay for the damage done. If (and this should be “since”) intellectual property rights are violated, these companies should pay the fines and damages including actual and punitive for failing to stop IP theft on their platforms. They should be subject to forensic accounting in order to verify that such IP rights have not been abused.

Milo was a bit too fabulous for me but he laid bare the damage done by feminazis in the modern western world. Can’t have that.
But who is going to hold them to those standards? Congress sure isn’t. And after a few comments about “deplatforming” last fall, even the White House seems to have gone back to sleep on this particular issue. The tech corporations will do whatever they want, with the expectation that no one will make them stop. And this far, they have been absolutely correct.
