California population growth tanks; LA Times tries to explain without mentioning high taxes
American Thinker ^ | 05/03/2019 | Thomas Lifson

MSN News reprints a paywalled Los Angeles Times story on a startling development: California’s population growth has tumbled to the slowest rate in the state’s history.  The wonderful weather, scenery, and other attractions that have drawn people since 1849 no longer work.

In asking themselves why this should be the case, writers Javier Panzar and Sarah Parvini manage to overlook the factor to is uppermost in my mind as I contemplate ending more than 30 years’ residence in the Golden State: the highest in the nation taxes, contrasted with the dismal state of the highways, schools, and other public services.

The effective tax burden in middle class and above Californians just jumped last year, as the federal deductibility for state and local taxes was limited to $12,000 a year, which drastically affects homeowners of million dollar houses (the average cost in many urban districts) and people who pay up to 13% in state income taxes.

Instead, the writers focus on the “housing crunch” and such gems as:

Ethan Sharygin, a demographer with the state, said researchers had expected to find a decline in the birthrate but were surprised to see such a large change. One reason for the shift, he said, is the decline in immigrants from Mexico paired with an increase in Asian immigrants.

“The overall profile of immigrants to California is higher education, which correlates to lower fertility,” he said. “With native-born, we see a long-running trend throughout the U.S where fertility has been trending downward.”

Perhaps the biggest force behind the change is higher education rates among women, Sharygin added. That broader trend historically has been masked by high immigration from Latin America, but that is no longer the case.

Uh...high taxes are definitely a big problem.

A 3/2 ranch house built in 1955 in Sunnyvale selling for $2.1 million is a lot bigger.

Not just taxes, but just as much a factor is how they view the Second Amendment. Every gun owner in California knows that they have ZERO protection from their state government when it comes to keeping their firearms, and all that is needed for them to lose everything and be at the mercy of MS-13 are Democrat-dominated federal courts.

[which we would have if the NeverTrumpers had their way in 2016, and which is also why I still have a big problem forgiving Ted Cruz for his flirtation with that bunch for as long as he did]

And the worst part is, if it wasn’t for the flood of low income illegals, the population growth would tank even more.

And how does that ever get fixed? The current owner likely paid $1.5 mil, and if real estate prices ever scaled back to something realistic they'd all be plunged into bankruptcy.

We bought our house in Solano County (30 mi. NE of SF) for $295K. Sold it in 2013 for $550k. It is now listed on Zillow for $1,259K. (It is not worth that!)

California population growth tanks;

And this is as the flood of illegals from Mexico continues unabated. The exodus of legal citizens from the state must be massive at this point, and I seriously need to begin planning my exit from California before my Silicon Valley house loses value.

"And how does that ever get fixed?"

It doesn't except through an extreme reset. Think civil war/revolution.

And, financially speaking, what’s leaving is the cream. What’s left is middle class people stuck there - and the “wards of the state”. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I have several customers in the construction business in Idaho. Almost every person moving into their state are from California or Seattle. The ratio is about 5/1 Ca/Wa.

Many are retiring to a place where the cost of living is so much cheaper. They are all cashing in on the difference in real estate values. Sell your place in Ca or Seattle for $1million and bank a $500+ profit or more. Then they buy a home in Idaho and have no mortgage.

We continue to see the same thing here in NH to some extent. People retire to their vacation home and sell their house in Mass, RI, CT, NY & PA. The problem is that it has changed NH from a RED state to PURPLE and leaning BLUE.
The same thing will happen to Idaho, AZ, NV, UT as more California people move into their states.

I remember growing up in OC in the 60s and early 70s. Those were the glory days w Disneyland, Knottsberyy Farm, beaches, and decent weather.

High taxes and the state and cities restricting building of homes and now reducing the number of lanes for existing roads plus all the bums living on the sidewalks.

Me as well, still here behind what we called the “Orange Curtain”. For the first time in my life our district is represented by a Democrat.

Yes, they are, but the bulk of native born blue state refugees are right voting conservatives.

I brought six conservative votes to Texas when I moved my family from California in 2005. That has been duplicated thousands of times since I arrived.

...an extreme reset.

It's coming. The left will not allow peaceful reconciliation or coexistence between us.
