You would be astonished to know how early (decades ago) this was reviewed/considered. Long before the treaty outlawing warfare in space we were considering a titanium rod which would be spun up and ejected to any target on earth.

I wonder if it is significantly more quiet and if this is seen as having some advantages.

“Kills terrorist with knives...”, but what about the ones with guns and bombs??

In Vietnam I’m told we dropped millions of thumb sized hardened steel bomblets out the back of cargo planes.

On the ground it sounded like a rainstorm.

Charlie’s first clue there was a problem was when one went through is rice bowl, the second, his helmet...

You never win a war until you either exterminate every single member of the enemy society or break the will of the people.

Never, never, never.

There is a very large and very classified group of researchers working to figure out how every new invention can be turned into a weapon of some kind. I have seen tungsten rods dropped from space — last I knew they were not very accurate. But these hellfire based missiles have guidance systems so they literally can hit a spot on the vehicle. The other thing we do is add kinetic energy by flying into the target and we can have a large range of explosives varying to no explosive at all. It all depends on the mission. Needless to say, there are some places where this is exactly what you want.

Yup, all it takes is a leader with the balls to say enough.

Partner, we think it is payback for the brutal killings by Mooselimbs. It is great to tell them we have bombs that have blades.

We should also tell the Mooselimbs that these bombs are loaded with bacon fat and knives that will give them the 72 virgins.

"I remember a long time ago, maybe in WWII, the U.S. was experimenting with dropping flechettes."

I have one in my collection of WWII gear. Solid cast metal, 4 fins, ~3.5" long, max O.D. = 0.65" ...

No kidding?! You have actually seen tungsten rods which had been dropped from space? Travelling at several miles per second? You must have very good vision! (As well as a very high Security Clearance.)

Tungsten. Titanium density (kinetic energy) is too low.

Actually the ones I “saw” were in lab photos, not so you could touch them. They were meant to be an inexpensive device compared to something very technical. But as I mentioned, they were effective at what they hit, but not very easy to predict where they would actually come down. I do not know if they were improved, or what happened to the design. (Outside of my clearance).

And regards to you too.
