Union representing Macy’s workers votes to authorize strike

A strike is looming at Macy’s stores in parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

After four months of contract negotiations, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1445 voted Sunday to authorize a strike if necessary. The union represents more than 1,000 Macy’s employees in Boston, Braintree, Natick, Peabody and Warwick, Rhode Island.

Local 1445 said it is fighting for more money for its workers and affordable healthcare, and will move to strike if an agreement isn’t reached soon.

This isn’t the first time the union has voted to authorize a strike in recent months.

In April, tens of thousands of Stop & Shop employees throughout New England walked off the job during an 11-day strike, which cost the company an estimated $100 million.

Has anyone told the Union that Macy's has closed over 100 stores in the last few years and is still doing so in 2019? Maybe Macy's employees should read up on what happened to Hostess who ignored the economic reality and not the fairy tale fantasy they unions had them beveling?

Several years ago my local Macy's closed before their lease was up and another when the lease expired. IIRC one of them was union and sadly, it showed. Many of the employees were lazy and disinterested and never offered to help unless asked. In a store like Macy's I expect to be asked if I need help, etc. when a employee is nearby.

Sadly, I recall a employee who was hired 10-12 months before they closed. I recall going their looking for a new suit and browsing the racks when she came up and offered to help, asking why I needed one, what was it for, (i.e. wedding, daily wear, interview, mixed, etc) and showed me a various options, recommended some ties, shirts, etc. to compliment it. I returned several times after and always received excellent service from her. I recall visiting when the store was closing and she was doing her best to keep the floor looking neat, still suggesting the best items from the remaining inventory based on what the customer needed.

Eventually, she admitted that she had immigrated legally 10 years prior, became a citizen and worked her way up from fast-food and wanted to be manager or supervisor to train employees to give the same level of service she gave, but wasn't eligible due to "work seniority rules" and her "boss" was the one playing on their phone at the register.

Sad story of good worker. Macy’s closed in our town years ago. Still a couple in outlying shopping centers. I bought a terrific jacket there a few weeks ago and the sales woman was like the one you describe. Just a darling human who managed to find a fairly decent discount for me on it though it wasn’t officially “on sale.”

Did you know you can ask for better prices ? Some stores will give them to you.

WHO on earth shops there? There is nothing there you can’t get way cheaper, at an outlet... practically across the street.

I find your statement untrue in my case. I often shop at Nordstrom’s and use Amazon as well. But Macy’s carries some brands that cannot be found anywhere else.

One of the Macy’s in my area is due to close soon but another one I believe will stay open. Even if one shops online it is handy to have a brick and mortar for items that do not work out. It is true that their staff is not helpful but they are okay for making returns.

When they started celebrating homosexuality in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, I quit shopping there.

I was in a Macy’s recently. Walked out after 10 minutes because I couldn’t find anyone to make the sale.

This is really gonna help.

The unions are doing a good job putting companies out of business, that really helps their “workers”.

Didn’t the union get the word that Obama made healthcare affordable with the “Affordable Care Act”?
