As the truth about Islam disappears in the virtual world, Islam needs to disappear in the real world.

So you can just rent a virtual server for $10 a month, install Apache and Wordpress, or whatever else you might like, and continue on.

Ping to Semimojo.

Hey! No Problem! It's okay if people are knocked off of mass communications systems so long as the government isn't doing it!

So you can just rent a virtual server for $10 a month...

And keep going until your hosting company decides that your server activity violates their revised "terms of service" and cancels your account.

This is how the Left is implementing censorship.

Large corporations are willing partners in such endeavors. Their executives and managers have a strong preference for enforcing totalitarian rules against opponents and critics.

It will be a long winter season with hard storms coming in.

Well, you’re pretty much right but having to find a new hosting service for a Wordpress instance is a pretty trivial burden.

You talk about free speech but none of these people have been silenced.

Is it a little harder for some of them to make money? Undoubtedly, but if the money is that important adhere to the terms of service.

What you want isn’t free speech, these people already have that, it’s government compelled publishing and distribution.

I think I’ll have the Department of Guaranteed Audiences make the NYT publish this post. Free speech, right?

From an ad:

“We allow all content to be stored on our servers. Very gore/unethical content is allowed. 99% uptime. We defend free speech at all cost. Pay with Bitcoin. We don’t suspend. Cheap additional IPv4. No terminations....”

A $5 server would suffice for most users. But you will spend your whole life applying security patches especially if you use Wordpress.

Looking at your comments above, can either of you recommend a host or technology where a non-html wizard could create a place to host the “tweaked” images I have been making, and maybe even make a little from advertising?

(scroll through my FR posts here for the images. I have more that are very anti-islam, so it looks like wordpress would be a problem...)

He suggests installing Wordpress open source on AWS, linode or digital ocean. I have used all three. I would stay away from AWS because Amazon is more likely to bend to the winds of political correctness. Linode and Digital Ocean are both pretty similar although DIgital Ocean has better help pages (most of those apply to general tasks, not just their services). I trimmed my Linode use to zero and my DIgital Ocean is down to just two servers. My AWS use is now just S3.

The other virtual hosting I use is vultr because I can pay with bitcoin. Being bitcoin-based it is probably going to be a little more wild west and might get blocked although I have not noticed that. Probably also less likely to censor.

I just googled and saw a number of web pages with the titles like "How To Hide The Fact That Your Website Runs On WordPress" They claim Wordpress is very secure, and I would say that relatively speaking there is less secure content management software out there. But the crux of the problem is that Wordpress is written in PHP which a garbage pit of a computer language and most PHP code is messy and unmaintainable and therefore hides security bugs. OTOH the language makes it easy to create dynamic HTML.

So I would look through those tutorials and read the ones that recommend a plug-in to hide wordpress, that hopefully also contains security scripts. Look carefully at all the plug-ins (their web pages) and find one that looks most legitimate. Hiding the fact that your pages are served up by Wordpress will go a long way towards security. The reason is that Wordpress continuously has security vulnerability disclosures. Then everyone rushes out to patch their copy. But you might be busy (like I said, you could spend your whole life applying patches). Then immediately upon disclosure of the vulnerabilities, all the script kiddies on the planet start probing websites to see if they have that vulnerability. Most of the time they probe every website regardless of whether they think it is running wordpress.

On my websites I get dozens of Wordpress and other vulnerability probes every day filling up my logs with useless crap. Mostly they are looking for "admin.php" or some other obviously lame page like that. I send back a reply that I do not use PHP at all so GFY. It doesn't help since there is no human on the other end.

In summary, you will have two problems, the script kiddies testing every single Wordpress vulnerability all day long. That will probably require patching, but also look at turning off every feature you don't use. Look for a "hide-my-wordpress" plugin that turns off features. Second you will be attacked by leftists. I believe hide-my-wordpress techniques will help for that. Those folks vary from script kiddie to semi-elite hacker and you want to obfuscate to thwart them. You can also rename pages you use like "admin" to something else random yourself. That way they can't test the tricks used by known "hide-my-wordpress" plug-ins. Also the hiders should be more than plug-ins, they should include scripts that do the renaming. If you do your own renaming, do it in a shell script so you can reapply after updat\ing Wordpress.

I very much appreciate the detail but I am embarrassed to admit your suggestions are way over my head.

I have used blogger in the past, as well as wordpress.com

The first of course was easy but is owned by google, and I found wordpress.com a royal PITA for a simple neighborhood blog, and if they are going to censor me on political memes, then I’m screwed.

PS - re “installing wordpress opensource”

is the first step for that starting at the “self hosted soluotions” under “Products” here?

That page com-vs-org has a link to dreamhost. I also have a dreamhost shell account and it is pretty useful. I am responding to you right now using that account (acting like a VPN). No problem at a crappy public wifi or having my employer see any of this material. It is all hidden because I ssh to dreamhost and then use Lynx to come to FR.

What happens with dreamhost is you get a shell to SSH into. That means you are one of 100 or more users on a large linux server. You have a user account which means you read and write your own files and cannot see anyone else's or any system files. Nor can anyone muck with your files except deamhost staff. Some sketchy people have hosted on dreamhost and dreamhost did their best to protect them from DDOS. So they are not bad IMO.

But you will have to get used to doing everything at a command prompt. You will type ls and see your files. Type mv to move or rename. Then go to the dreamhost control panel in your browser to do some other admin. But you will create files on your local windows computer (or better yet a mac), then sftp those files to your dreamhost account. Then ssh to the dreamhost account to do a little mv, ls and light editing (text only, not graphical). On a mac that means simply open a shell and type ssh or sftp (or scp which is very similar to sftp). On Windows you have to install that stuff. When I type "which ssh" into my Windows bash terminal (you will have to install that too), I see /c/Program Files/OpenSSH/bin/ssh.exe That means I installed that program and it lets me access my dreamhost shell account.

If you don't think that will work for you, no need to explain further. But if you can manage that, then you will probably succeed over time with a shell account. It's $5/month or $2.59 if you pay for three years at one time. The Digital Ocean server would be $5/month but you would have to install everything yourself. E.g. lookup "Install LAMP on Ubuntu and Linux Mint" and see what you think of that complexity. But in that case you would have the server to yourself, no other grubby users on it.

Thank you.

I am going to save the explanation and the link and hopefully at some point try it (the cost is so close nothing except in time).

I get the impression there is no “blogging template” to work from in this case, it’s going to be all raw HTML?
