Several thousand people rallied on Wednesday in Russias fourth-largest city as the showdown between authorities and activists protesting the plans to a build a new cathedral in a local park entered its third day.
Thousands gathered in a riverside park in Yekaterinburg Wednesday evening. Some of them were on bicycles, more camped out on the grass while others were walking their dogs.
As night fell, protesters turned on the light on their mobile phones and flashlights, chanting We stand for the park!
Security measures for what has largely been a peaceful protest were heighted on the eve of the rally, with hundreds of riot police deployed to the park. Earlier, construction workers started building a new, sturdy fence to replace the chain-link fence that the protesters brought down a day earlier.
Opponents of the cathedral, which is promoted by authorities and funded by the owners of two major local industrial giants, say the construction project smack in the city center would take away green and recreational space needed by residents of a city with 1.5 million people.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters earlier Wednesday that the Kremlin has full trust in the local government to handle the protests but also decried the rallies which he described as unsanctioned demonstrations which violate Russian law.
Hundreds of protesters stayed in the park well after midnight facing several rows of riot police who were encircling the fence around the proposed construction site.

The city where they killed the Romanovs.
Nice touch, the three USSR flags. Back in the day, they wouldn’t be allowed unsupervised tech like their smart phones. USSR required guards next to copy machines, lest unauthorized ideas be printed and spread. If the powers-that-were were in charge and decided to build ‘Ball Bearing Factory No. 7’ at the park site, there would have been no protest allowed.
(But they’re young and the world began with their births).
Russia has Democrats? ... Who woulda thunk it?
Are there no other areas in that city, where the cathedral could be built? Cathedrals are great to have, but so too is open space that many have made use of for years.
To use a known quote; “There are good people on both sides.”
I’m kind of on their side. This sounds like a project nobody wants but people in power were paid so dammit, it’s gonna happen.
Hmm...The House of Special Purpose in Ekaterinburg, the former Ipatiev mansion where the entire Romanov family was murdered in 1918, was razed in 1977 by regional Party chief Boris Yeltsin.
The Church on the Blood was erected on that site in the 1990’s. It has been visited by foreign heads of state.
No relation to the current church controversy, I guess.
It shows that in Russia today one has to walk a very fine line, there are still many that are supportive of the Romanovs and those who support the Bolsheviks.
Putin tries to play it down the middle, more or less.
Gotta love Commies and their euphemistic names.
Nice hammer and sickle flags they’re waving
They’re the Russian equivalent of Humanist, Antifa, BLM and Liberal Prog University students in America.
Parks can be anywhere. Location is so arbitrary.
Build the cathedral.
In fact protestors has a point. Downtown Yekaterinburg literally has more Orthodox churches than Vatican has churches at all. Why won’t Orthodox build their Cathedral in Chinese or Muslim parts of the city? Also some parts of Yekaterinburg has disproportional presence of 7th say adventists and Methodists. Why won’t they build their church across the street from Methodist temple in Southwest?
Another point the issue is rather minor and local. Western MSM make it big and the crowd gets highjacked by Commie and Soros types.
