Why do they have to identify the suspect as a military veteran?Because they consider it an aggravating factor and it exemplifies the "violent, unstable, PTSD-afflicted veteran" stereotype that the media has played up since 'Nam.
If the perpetrator of a violent crime is a veteran, it will ALWAYS be reported.
