The Senate confirmed another of President Trumps picks to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday, the sixth seat hes filled on the famously liberal appeals court.
Daniel Collins cleared the Senate by a party line vote, 53 to 46.
He is filling a seat claimed by California, and both that states senators objected, saying Mr. Trump ignored their wishes in nominating Mr. Collins.
Collins has a history of undermining civil and reproductive rights, even working to restrict access to birth control. California deserves better, Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said in a tweet as lawmakers began debating the confirmation.
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, New York Democrat, said Mr. Collins filed a brief in support of Hobby Lobby in its challenge to the contraceptive mandate within the Affordable Care Act and also defended pro-life pregnancy clinics from being forced to disclose abortion service information to patients.
Hes a longtime donor and member of the Federalist Society, and hes ensconced himself in one of the most anti-choice organizations in the entire country, Mr. Schumer said.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, though, said the nominee has clerked at the 9th Circuit, the Supreme Court, served in the Justice Department as well as worked in private practice.
He received a well-qualified rating from the American Bar Association.
Mr. Collins has developed a reputation for legal excellence, Mr. McConnell said.

Go, Trump! MAGA!
I’ll continue to point this out here AS LONG AS NECESSARY, which is until I stop hearing people here bitch about having only a RINO to vote for in the November elections...and then talking about not voting for the RINO, out of some demented ‘principle’.
The vote here was 53-46 for Collins to join the Ninth Circuit, a straight party line vote. That means the following -
1. EVERY Republican in the Senate voted FOR him. This includes ROMNEY, COLLINS, MURKOWSKI, and the many other Republican Trump haters. Without their votes, Collins would have been dead in the water.
2. EVERY Democrat in the Senate voted AGAINST him. This includes Doug Jones and Joe Manchin. So even the most conservative Democrats in the Senate still will not support Trump’s judges, regardless of what they may promise you before election time [I specifically remember people here telling us not to worry about Manchin, as he’s ‘one of us’. Well, he wasn’t on this vote, nor many other votes].
If Trump didn’t have his 53 Republicans in the Senate, he would be COMPLETELY NEUTERED as president, unable to do a damn thing in the White House. Millions of Republicans have held their noses in countless elections, but still voted for Senate RINOs when it counted, in November, and because of those people, we’re getting judges seated.
So, you people who still sit out elections in November, because the Republican on the ticket isn’t perfect, GROW UP, you’re not doing anyone here a favor with your ‘principled’ stance, you’re only enabling the Democrats - and you need to accept that FACT. If you don’t like the Republican candidate, deal with it in the Primary, and ONLY in the Primary...when November comes, remember the party-line vote here, and the many other party-line and near party-line votes.
In Liberal Speak, telling someone they have to pay for it themselves is equal to "undermining their rights". I for one am tired of the government "undermining my rights" to live in an ocean front mansion and drive a Bentley.
Keep it up Mitch!
Now, if only he could get in 10 more.
I agree with you 100% Mr BobL
Why aim for only ten more?
Figure 5.5 years of Trump to go, and dozens more to be approved. Even RBG will eventually be replaced by Trump.
Thanks Jaysin - most here do, but still a number of people just can’t pull the lever on someone who we might all agree is sub-optimal, but is still far, far, better than any Democrat, as this vote and many others have shown.
This is why we must hold the Senate in 2020!
Well... well... well...
Finally the Conservatives are getting around to undoing the Socialist underpinnings of the Bill Clinton Presidency circa 1995.
How about the 16th amendment, and all that socialist mumbo jumbo and the progressive gun-control bans dating to 1905?
Because that would fill the 9th.
Don’t hold your breath on repealing the income tax, or anything else for that matter.
As it is, it’s probably too little too late, but at least we’re now fighting a bit.
I do believe though that the RINO’s are confirming, not in support of Trump, but in support of Mitch and the internal senate politics, which is still fine by me.
even in the few cases where the R votes no on a nominee for whatever ideological reason, it’s all part of the game, and Mitch will only put the vote on the floor when he knows the nominee will be confirmed. for example Mitt’s recent no vote on Eastern Texas District judge Michael Truncale.
Mitt got to look tough, but he knew the vote was going to pass anyways.
Yeah. It’s a little way, way too late.
But at least we are treading water. Sure beat the deep dives in the deep end under Obama, Bush and Clinton.
Well, you’ve won the Free Republic comment of the Day, for sure, IMHO. And could be in the running for Comment of the Month, maybe even, Comment of the Year.
Republican Voter:
Agrees with candidate on 99 out of 100 issues....stays home because their pet issue isn’t the most important thing on candidates policy paper.
Democrat Voter:
Agrees with their candidate on ONE out of 1000 issues....shows up eagerly, votes early, votes often and will even vote for some dead folks, since they still have a right to vote, because as long as their candidate doesn’t have a problem with someone marrying a pine tree, they’re A-OK and get the votes.
RINO, until voted out and replaced by a stronger Conservative, is better than any Dem, by light years. At least with a RINO, if that’s the only choice, they’re voting with the party the strong majority of the time.
Dem is voting party line, no matter what and against America and it’s citizens every step of the way.
As for Jones, he’s only pretending to be a smidgen of Conservative because party bosses let him. He wins next year, he’ll have 6 years to do some damage and wreak havoc.
The job description of being Senate Majority Leader includes being able to not just count votes but to line them up. Many favors, threats, deals, and promises are made toward that end.
Exactly - they’re definitely not supporting the judges because they love Trump, at least most of the Senate Republicans. I suspect a few factors -
1 - They defer to the president on nominations, provided nothing egregrious shows up, even RINOs do that. In Trump’s case, they’re virtually all outstanding picks - so it’s easy for them here.
2 - They know the judges will be around long after Trump is gone.
3 - They see the damage being done by Democrat judges and they want to stop it.
