Siri is not a person. Siri is a simulation. If it were named Jack, and had a voice with a lower frequency, they would say it represented the patriarchy and male dominance.

Is the UN not aware that you can change the voice and gender of Siri? Mine is set as a British man - much better for this Anglophile lady. When you ask Siri it lists a lot of languages and accents that it can do.

Women voices are predominant in most customer-facing interactions. Be it a receptionist in an office building, the voice you hear on your car navigators, or the operator who picks up the phone when you hit "0" in a voice mail tree (and the voice mail tree recording is usually a female voice as well).

In my own office, many of my male co-workers have a female co-worker record their voice mail greetings for them.

This is all because a female voice is typically more pleasant than a man's voice in a customer facing setting. This is market driven. People would rather hear a pleasant female voice then a man's typically gruffy voice.

Women should not be ashamed of this or feel "subservient" in any way. They should be proud of this area in which they are clearly superior to their male counterparts.

That said, as pleasant as a women's voice can be, many women choose to become a nagging wife, a hectoring mother-in-law or a Democrat politician and then their voices suddenly sound like nails on a chalkboard. If only they could turn back on the charm and use their feminine wiles, things would get a lot smoother for them and they would get what they want more often.

Whether male or female, Siri’s speech should reflect that of an assistant - should behave like a a subordinate to an officer. In the extreme case, always saying “Yes sir!” But mostly by echoing back the user’s commands in standard phraseology to prove that the order is understood. “Sound alarm at 8 AM tomorrow, aye!”

None of this “I wish I could do that, but you don’t seem to be connected to the Internet” stuff. Tell me I’m not connected to the Internet - and tell me what is known about why I’m not connected to the internet. If I’m set to Airplane Mode, tell me! If I’m set to my home WiFi and I’m miles from home, say so. Actually help!

There's actually a good reason for default female voices: better clarity in noisy environments, for example a moving automobile. Also, a male voice can be a bit off-putting to many users.
