Jamie Oliver's restaurant chain in the UK collapses, risking 1,300 jobs

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver's British restaurant chain has become insolvent, putting 1,300 jobs at risk.

The firm said Tuesday that it had gone into administration, a form of bankruptcy protection, and appointed KPMG to oversee the process.

The company operates 23 Jamie's Italian restaurants in the U.K. The company had been seeking buyers amid increased competition from casual dining rivals, according to The Guardian. Oliver began his restaurant empire in 2002 when he opened Fifteen in London.

Oliver, known around the world for his cookbooks and television shows, said he was "deeply saddened by this outcome and would like to thank all of the staff and our suppliers who have put their hearts and souls into this business for over a decade."

He said "I appreciate how difficult this is for everyone affected."

The reason is yes, Brexit uncertainty related - When the company shuttered 6 of Jamie’s Italian restaurants in early 2017, it said it had been hit by the Brexit vote and the resulting depreciation of the British pound—importing ingredients became more expensive.

At least they didn’t blame the closing on Climate Change.

I like him. I like his food. I'm sorry this has happened to him. But no one wants to hear the political views of a guy who didn't read his first book until he was 38. It wears thin. Just shut up and sing. Or cook. Or whatever it is you do.

From Wiki:

In July 2000, Oliver married Juliette Norton.[73] They have five children: Poppy Honey Rosie (b. March 2002), Daisy Boo Pamela (b. April 2003), Petal Blossom Rainbow (b. April 2009), Buddy Bear Maurice (b. September 2010) and River Rocket Blue Dallas (b. August 2016).[74]

Oliver has severe dyslexia, and read his first novel (Catching Fire) in 2013, at the age of 38.[75]

That's not what they're saying in England. Jamie's restaurants are part of a trend where takeaways and deliveries are way up and in house visits are way down. At least 3 other chains have gone into administration this year.

As for Jamie, it was a holding company that went bankrupt. He is still quite well off and he protected his personal assets. He will do just fine.

At least they didn’t blame the closing on Climate Change.

They aren't allowed to name the real culprit, but think about it for a minute. Food delivery and takeout is surging while restaurant visits are declining, especially in large cities like London. People are still spending money on good food. They just don't want to be sitting ducks.

Britain is now the most obese nation in Western Europe, so that is probably a big factor also.

In 2017 I went to a very nice Jamie restaurant, Barbacoa, on Piccadilly, a gorgeous two story place. It was a shock to see it was gone in 2018 when I walked down that street again.

Sad to see his comments about President Trump but there, they get all negative “news” about the President.

Remember when Oliver got very testy with a female reporter for daring to mention the obvious... that he had gained a good bit of weight.

“...1300 jobs at risk?” At risk of what? There is no more “risk” They have no more jobs to “risk.” Liberalspeak can be child-like.
