President Trump has signed a memorandum enforcing a provision requiring sponsors of legal immigrants to pay back the government for any social services used by the immigrant.

The provision was part of the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) and Welfare Reform laws enacted by then-President Bill Clinton. The law stated that immigrants should “not depend on public resources to meet their needs.” However, the provision has not been enforced.

ZACTLY how it is in Japan:

Somebody sponsors you and you SKIP..? They are on the hook for it.

Isn't that what a freaking SPONSOR is, though..?

Let them SHOW they believe in you, that is, IF they do.

What a novel thought, that people should be charitable with their own money and not with money that has been confiscated from somebody else.

My grandpa came in in 1899. He had sponsors (family members) in Iowa). They were expected to be financially responsible for him. He found work.

Neither President Trump nor most conservatives I know have much problem with LEGAL immigration. It is Illegal immigration we object to, and as a concomitant, ANY implication that any other nation or organization should have any say on our immigration and asylum policies.

If we want to admit anyone, that’s our business. If we want to admit no one, that is our business, not that of the UN, or Mexico or any damned NGO.

Immigration isn’t a bad thing, per se.

All of us who aren’t Indian have that in our blood, but my grandfather came here under the rules, got a job and didn’t go on welfare, as a skilled stonemason he had work, and if there hadn’t been masonry work he would have done any job at all.

We need some immigration, and there are genuine refugees.

The purpose and function of our immigration policy should be to FIRST ‘brain drain’ the rest of the world, and second to be a refuge for those oppressed bsocialist oppression and islamofascism.

“This is exactly the way it was when immigrants came through Ellis Island over 100 years ago.”

Those immigrants came in the front door and followed the rules. They wanted opportunity they didn’t have in the old country.
The illegal alien invaders sneak in the back door and expect hard working US citizens to pay for their every desire while they turn our country into the same sort of pesthole they left.

Where is the law?
Does it say how long a sponsor is responsible for the green card holder? Is there a time limit?

I could have sworn this was the way it was done back in the 1980s.

At least that is what I thought was required to immigrate here.

How does this work if let’s say...a military man marries a foreign woman. Move back to the US with wife and 2 kids that are US citizens. Husband sponsors wife.

2 years later they divorce. She stays in the US and gets welfare for kids and herself.

Does the ex have to pay it back? or do the children?

I brought my lovely wife here (legally) from China. I had to declare that we were legally married and I was responsible for taking care of her. INS also stated that if she ever became a “charge “ that I was going to be held accountable for any expenditures that the government incurred for her care.
