Maybe it’s just me but I suspect these disagreements between bears and humans show a failure to communicate.

The data I’ve seen indicates even a 9mm is very effective at getting bears, including grizzlies, to break off an attack.

A major disadvantage of using bear spray is that the sprayer ends up mauled or dead.

I do not hunt anymore. I just got tired of killing. I have absolutely no problem with ethical hunters. One of these hunters hunts my land and we share the most delicious venison and turkey.

If I were in bear country I sure as hell would be carrying my AR-10 (20 rounds of 7.62-51 fired off in just a few seconds will kill anything in North America) and a 1911. If taken by surprise and not able to use my rifle, perhaps I could get to my 1911. If I could not, I am dead. I have no desire to kill a bear. I sure as hell would kill the bear if he was trying to kill me.

ps
I do kill vermin on my land. That is not hunting but just house cleaning. Unfortunately the Great State Of Texas does not consider liberal progressives vermin. Just kidding :)

Relative to the physiology of a bear or human when in attack mode, it takes a few seconds for bear spray to take effect. Both the bear and human are running on adrenaline and other senses are not as acute. It is all tunnel vision. Bears are fast as hell. The bear may have already killed or mauled you before he even knows he has been hit with bear spray. A bullet cause instant trauma, physical shock and pain and hopefully death if correctly placed.

12 GA w/00 buckshot and slugs mixed will work both upwind and downwind - unlike “Bear spray”.

I must be confused. I thought "bear spray" was what happened when you were startled by a charging bear and fired multiple shots in quick succession at the bear with whatever firearm you had available. And then reloaded and fired a couple of extra rounds into the bear just to make sure.

I always give charging bears an AMEX . Nobody ever accepts it outside of hotels.

Bear spray is only useful in that it would allow you to bring a suitable "bear gun" to bear, so to speak.

The one on the right, that is:

Let’s see:

Spray mace in a bears face and piss him off...

.454 Cazul 4-5 time in bears face...much better...

I guess Mrs. Bear was charging way too much on the AMEX and Mr. Bear finally did her in.

Simple:
Make a good 80 proof bear spray.

Hunters will always have it with them...

“Why Requiring Hunters to Carry Bear Spray is a Bad Idea”

The answer is blowing in the wind. One small little breeze pops up in the your face when you’re using bear spray on an attacking bear and you are demobilized.

While I agree that Dean Weingarten is a good guy, as far as I know, FReeper Mark Twain is not Dean.

Dean didn’t link the blog post to Free Republic, Mark did.

The best bet is to simply post the entire blog post. That’s all Humblegunner has ever asked.

He is Dean. We’ve chatted a few times about his appearances an Bill Frady’s second amendment radio show in South Carolina called Lock and Load.
He’s really good there. A great resource for second amendment advocates.

Really. this is some morons/idots, flatlanders and cityslickers who don’t know what the hell they are talking about giving advise that could get people killed. Stick it where the sun does not shine.

We live with the critters, two mountain lion close sightings from our home windows in the last month. The bears come down to our orchard, within 40 yards of our home to eat the apples every fall. We also have bobcats, fishers, and all of the other biting and non biting critters here. I killed a dozen rattle snakes here last year, three on the walkway, steps and front pouch.

Now these useless city folks want to tell me how to deal with bears. They can put it all where the sun does not shine and STFU before they get someone killed.

The olde joke about bear spray comes from the story of the expert bear hunter guide/tracker. He describes analyzing different animal scat/feces-— example: this is an elk because of the compact pelletized largely green cellulosic matter. Then they see bear scat— and the guide says age and size and sex of the bear, as well as certainly a bear.

Hunter asks how can you tell bear scat like that- Answer: it’s pretty easy— see the chewed up fingers and bone, and smell that? It smells JUST LIKE BEAR REPELLENT SPRAY!

Considering proper placement, of course, is there a creature alive a 4-bore won’t stop?

IIRC, each slug weighs 4 oz!

just for the record, the last 5 bear I’ve killed have been under 30’ with a 12 gage stoked with one oz sabot-ed slugs.
The remains of the last one are still in my freezer.

I don’t tell the city folks how to survive on Knob Hill, the tenderloin, or union square so they need to STFU about surviving outside of civilization because they do not know what the hell they are talking about.
