An informant is a cooperator who intentionally provides information to government agents. A source is whom or what the information comes from — often a person, sometimes an operation (like a wiretap)...

Somewhat densely, this [NYT passage] indicates that “a person close to Putin” was a “source” for intelligence that made its way to the CIA. The source was “long nurtured by the C.I.A.” But the article does not say this source was providing information directly to the CIA. Instead, the CIA was relying on “a key informant” for its conclusion that Putin personally ordered the election meddling...
Note that last part. The Times does not say the source communicated directly with the informant...
Why is all this written in such an obscure manner? I suspect the ball being hidden here is: The informant is either Christopher Steele or, more likely, someone in Russia who relayed source information to Steele; and the source is one of the Kremlin insiders close to Putin from whom Steele claimed to be getting information — most likely, Vladislav Surkov or Vyasheslov Trubnikov.

Andy makes the smart point that if it was something other than Steele's b.s., then the Steele dossier would no longer be "uncorroborated." Yet it has always been unverified.

If there was a Putin confidant that created the “intelligence” (it was Hillary Clinton) then he or she should be exposed and if Putin decides to liquidate this source then it is a win-win for the American people.
Andy is all wet on this one. Nellie Ohr, Steele, Blumenthal, and Simpson made up the dossier without any Russian assistance. It was a total hoax.

Nothing else matters from an intelligence standpoint when information regarding the coup is needed. A coup against a sitting President requires any and all intelligence or methods used for such to be made public. If not, the intelligence excuse will be used again
Agree on Shearer. Nellie Ohr got her info from open sources and perhaps was one of the contractors who had access to NSA data via 702 searches. The dossier was just a cover story for widespread abuse that had been going on since 2012 or earlier. Russian influence on the 2016 election was negligible. It is laughable.
Recall that after the election Obama ordered the IC community to produce an assessment of Russian influence on the election and mandated that it be on his desk before he left office. Another blatant cover- up to justify what they did. It was capped off on Inauguration Day by Susan Rice’s email that Obama wanted everything done “by the book.”
IMO Biden’s mission is to defend Obama and his Administration. That is why he is in the 2020 race.
