Advantage of Handguns for Defensive Use Against Bears: the Bear is Usually Killed
Ammoland ^ | 31 May, 2019 | Dean Weingarten

On 5 May, 2019,  Ashley Gribble was walking in the woods with her five dogs. She had bear spray. She encountered a black bear that exhibited typical predatory black bear behavior.

The bear kept coming, even after the bear spray was used.   Fortunately, one of Ashley's dogs, 80 pound Bane, jumped between the bear and Ashley. Here is some of Ashley's account from facebook:

I was able to discharge my bear spray but it did not stop the bear. At this point I'm yelling and backing up while the dogs are barking. As I do so, I fell backwards over a rock. When I was on the ground, the bear just a few feet from me, lunged and I prepared myself for a bite. It was at this moment that my dog Bane lept in front of me and the bear attacked him instead.

This bear picked my 80lb dog up like a stick and proceeded to run with him for a short distance. They grappled, Bane was able to get free and run but then the bear chased him like he would chase a deer, grabbed his behind, bit into his back, covered him with his body and pinned Bane. I'm screaming and yelling help and then before I even knew what was happening, with adrenaline surging through me, my instincts were taking over and I was running full tilt at the bear with a log. I proceeded to beat that bear in the face and head with the log repeatedly, specifically aiming for his eyes and nose. Finally, after about a dozen blows,

Bear spray failed. The dog saved her. A pistol would have been very useful.

The image is one Ashley took of the bear as it kept following/approaching her and the dogs.

Someone posted a list of handgun calibers used to kill Brown Bears. I was surprised to see that 9mm Luger was first. Probably because it is the most popular.

I personally would not carry anything less than a .44 mag loaded with 240 gr. hard cast semi wadcutters.

With the Lugar you have to be a good shot. With the .44, you just have to make sure you hit it. I’ll go with the .44 too.

It kills me when I see and hear people say that bear spray is a defensive measure for bears. Rangers, naturalists put people’s lives in jeapordy by suggesting this hogwash. The only good bear is a dead bear.

When I go hiking, my .44 magnum comes with me.

It takes more than a big log to beat off a bear.

I usually take my 4" S&W Model 629 with PMC 240 gr JHP 44mag loads when hiking the mountains south of Pocatello. We have wolves, mountain lions and black bears. Grizzlies are found out east in Soda Springs. For a more casual carry, a 5 shot L-frame S&W Model 69 44mag is an option. If I'm seriously expecting an encounter, the 5" S&W in 460 Magnum comes along with 300 to 440 gr rounds. The problem with the latter is it is pretty heavy and is perpetually dragging my pants down.

The videos were pretty intense. While my usual carry when hiking is a 44mag, I have a Springfield XDm in 10mm that can hold 15 rounds. Perhaps a better choice with some hot Corbon or Buffalo Bore or Underwood loads for bear country.

Even a 44mag can ricochet off the skill of a grizzly.
