most people have absolutely no concept of the size and scope of Operation Overlord; the allied invasion of Normandy and destruction of nazi germany.

Eisenhower's Crusade in Europe is a good place to start.

Eisenhower had a great love and appreciation for his NCO’s and met with the boys that were jumping ahead of the invasion. I’ve read a lot about the man. I believe it ripped him up to give the go for the landing. He was a good man in an awful position. He made the right choice, I’m not sure I could’ve done it. If not ours, I’m sure it was Ike’s Longest Day.

I’m willing to bet my next paycheck on that. (Oops, I’m retired!!!)

But I imagine he was overflowing with AMERICAN Pride...and to a good extent, pride in his British roots as well

At the opening scene of Animal House, they showed a statue of Faber, the college founder, with a quote: “Knowledge is good!” I agree...

That’s a nice way to start the day. Particularly in memory of all those who lives on this day so long ago who would savor each word of this song so much.

I only wonder why they didn’t shell the crap out of the German positions for an hour before landing. Exposing the men to those hardened machine-gun positions was nuts.

I don’t have extensive knowledge of the events, does anyone here know why?

I kinda of wish Ike hadn’t given the go ahead. The USSR and Germany would have slugged it our for a few more years, eventually defeating Germany but weakening themselves into oblivion. If they had tried to hold all of Europe behind the Iron Curtain, they would have fallen apart almost immediately. Too many people to fight all at once, especially after a prolonged fight against Nazi Germany.
