There have always been guys who 'couldn't get a date'.
In the past most of these guys would have thought they were the only ones.
Now they have the internet to meet each other.
I doubt this is less of a trend and more a discover there are others out there like them.

You would think that they would take the opportunity to commiserate with each other and buck each other up, rather than plot killing sprees.

In the past most of these guys would have thought they were the only ones.
From a practical standpoint, this problem can be largely solved by time. Eighteen year old guy turned down by high school classmates. As the boy grows older, the pool of potential mates expands. Outside of a handful of undesirable cougars, it doesn't work the other way. If you get credentialed (including vocational) and have steady employment, there will be good women who will give you a chance as you get older, even if you are not "wealthy" or particularly handsome.
