I thought oil tankers had to be double hulled, reinforced, non-distructive tested annually etc to keep their insurance... Maybe oil tankers are harder to take down.

When the Iranians last got frisky and put mines in the Persian Gulf the US Naval escort commander put the tankers single file and let the lead tanker “soak up” all the mine hits. He realized that an oil tanker is a very difficult thing to sink and he wasn’t going to risk US cruisers, destroyers & frigates when the probably couldn’t survive a single mine explosion. This was all after Ronald Reagan undertook to “re-Flag” all the tankers that wanted US naval protection.
