With NEAR CERTAINTY, the reason George Stephanopoulus was ASSIGNED the task about the President being given information (even when TRUE) from foreign sources to hopefully prevent him from releasing the information in time for the 2020 campaign.

IMHO, the information whose release “they” want “inoculated” from release has to do with the Obama regime asking for foreign assistance (e.g. Italian, British and Australian intelligence assets) and/or corrupt activities related to associates and/or family members of potential 2020 ‘RAT presidential candidates.
