Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan on Tuesday withdrew his nomination to lead the department as a report says the FBI is investigating a domestic violence dispute from nine years ago involving him and his then-wife.
“Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan, who has done a wonderful job, has decided not to go forward with his confirmation process so that he can devote more time to his family,” President Trump wrote in a Twitter posting.
“I thank Pat for his outstanding service and will be naming Secretary of the Army, Mark Esper, to be the new Acting Secretary of Defense,” he continued, adding “I know Mark, and have no doubt he will do a fantastic job!”
Trump appointed Shanahan, a former Boeing executive, to acting secretary last December after James Mattis stepped down.
The White House said last month that the president would nominate him as permanent secretary but the paperwork was never officially sent to the Senate.
Trump’s announcement on Twitter came about an hour after USA Today reported the FBI is revisiting a violent domestic dispute between Shanahan and his his now ex-wife Kimberly as part of the background investigation for his confirmation hearing in the Senate.

The “devoting more time to my family” routine is basically a face-saving maneuver.
Now let’s find someone even better. I wasn’t totally sold on this guy anyway.
10 to 1 the ex learned of his nomination and called the FBI just to spite him.
I think the optics with a nominee like Bill Devane would be spectacular.

His nose and arm were bloody when police arrived, and her forearm had blood stains on it.

Or the 1% at the FBI that are not good (Hannity 99% of the FBI is great stats) spited Trump. See. It doesn’t matter if 99% of the FBI is good if the 1% are bad and running things. If that’s what happened. I’m not saying it did.

Retired Admiral Mike Rogers would be an excellent Secretary of Defense, IMO.

Apparently his ex-wife assaulted him, she was charged, he never was. In addition, his teenage son assaulted his mother with a baseball bat. This was at least 10 years ago.
I don’t know all the facts, but it sounds that she was a high maintenance type.
Yeah but then his son-in-law might turn out to be a traitor, and his daughter might have a romantic interest in a special ops guy during a national crisis, and that would just get too complicated...
Retired Naval and current South Korean Ambassador Admiral Harry B Harris, former Congressman retired (U.S. Army) Col. Alan West, or retired (U.S. Army) Col. Robert L. Maginnis all would be excellent choices. IMHO
