Chick-fil-A has whipped past rivals to become the third-largest restaurant chain in the US.
The chicken chain's massive growth in 2018 moved itto #3 on the ranking of the largest US restaurant chains with $10.46 billion in Americansystemwide sales, according to Nation's Restaurant News analysis published Monday.
McDonald's maintained the No. 1 spot, with $38.52 billion in American system-wide sales. Starbucks held on to second place with $20.49 billion.
Chick-fil-A moved up from the No. 7 spot on last year's Nation's Restaurant News' Top 200, passing Wendy's, Burger King, Taco Bell, and Subway. Chick-fil-A's system-wise sales grew 16.7% in 2018, up from $8.97 billion.
Experts say there is no reason to believe Chick-fil-A's growth will slow anytime soon. If anything, Starbucks should be worried it could lose its silver medal.
"Can they double that? I think that is a very reasonable goal for them," Kalinowski Equity Research founder Mark Kalinowski told Business Insider in May.
"I would be surprised if they didn't double that in the not-too-distant future," Kalinowski added. "Can they reach $30 billion? I think that's also a realistic goal if you give them enough time. And that should put them ahead of Starbucks."
Chick-fil-A competes with chains that have many more locations because of its enviable average unit volumes. On average, a Chick-fil-A location brought in $4.6 million in annual sales in 2018, up from $4.2 million in 2017 - more than any other fast-food chain. By comparison, the average McDonald's location made $2.8 million.
Chick-fil-A has plenty of room for growth as it continues to expand outside the South.
"They're severely under-penetrated," Kalinowski said. "Once you start looking at all these other big metropolitan areas in all these states, there's room for growth for, not just years and years to come but potentially decades to come."

We’ve always eaten there once in a while, but we eat there more often since liberal bullies were boycotting it. Other reasons include:
* rarely ever getting an order wrong
* meticulously clean facilities
* excellent customer service
I agree that Starbucks shouldn’t be in a list of “restaurants”. They get a boost in sales numbers for having coffee-only corners in grocery stores.
Not just that.
Good food.
Good service.
Good corporate policies, not just hiring the first people that walk in the door and pass the drug test.
I know a family that has sent all their kids to Chick-Fila as a first job. They work in a safe place, they learn customer service and business skills, and they get Sundays off with family without having to ask for it.
Starbucks, the chain of liberal-infested coffee shops, is a restaurant chain? Who knew?
Or lots of hungry closeted Rs!
My son worked for CFA for 3 years. He entered their scholarship contest and didn’t quite win but was close. The boss wrote my son a check for $1000 from his personal account.
The Chick fil A Sandwich is $3.55 for the sandwich only. The Deluxe is $4.15
Their most expensive sandwich is Smokehouse BBQ, or the Grilled Chicken Club, at $6.39 each
McDonald's Bacon clubhouse burger is $6.49, burger only.
Arby's smokehouse brisket is $5.59, sandwich only
BK's Ultimate A1 Bacon burger is $6.29, burger only
Where is this "steep price" at CFA??
The food is better than the big two, but it was all the free publicity that put them over the top.
Oh, they're around. Off the top of my head, Lynnwood, Kirkland, Southcenter, Tacoma, Puyallup, Covington.
Nine locations in King County according to Google.
LOL - My excuse is that I have only lived here for 15 years!

Cronos if you want the best chicken sandwich go to Popeye’s. Never have liked CFA, overpriced and mediocre at best. Still better than KFC though.
