Mike Exner, a prominent member of the Independent Group, has studied the radar data extensively. He believes that during the turn, the airplane climbed up to 40,000 feet, which was close to its limit. Exner believes the reason for the climb was to accelerate the effects of depressurizing the airplane, causing the rapid incapacitation and death of everyone in the cabin.
The cockpit, by contrast, was equipped with four pressurized-oxygen masks linked to hours of supply.
Zaharie was often lonely and sad. His wife had moved out, and was living in the familys second house. By his own admission to friends, he spent a lot of time pacing empty rooms waiting for the days between flights to go by. There is a strong suspicion among investigators in the aviation and intelligence communities that he was clinically depressed.
Forensic examinations of Zaharies simulator by the FBI revealed that he experimented with a flight profile roughly matching that of MH370a flight north around Indonesia followed by a long run to the south, ending in fuel exhaustion over the Indian Ocean.
I met with one of Zaharies lifelong friends, a fellow 777 captain. He too believed that Zaharie was guilty. I asked about a motive. He had no idea. He said, Zaharies marriage was bad.
There is some suspicion, from fuel-exhaustion simulations that investigators have run, that the airplane, if simply left alone, would not have dived quite as radically as the satellite data suggest that it dida suspicion, in other words, that someone was at the controls at the end, actively helping to crash the airplane. Either way, somewhere along the seventh arc, after the engines failed from lack of fuel, the airplane entered a vicious spiral dive with descent rates that ultimately may have exceeded 15,000 feet a minute.

But otherwise has some interesting discussion, explains why many alternate theories are unlikely.
People have committed mass murder for a number of reasons. Depression or a failed marriage is as good a motivation as any.
The discussion of the motive is unsatisfying, as clinical depression and a bad marriage doesn’t seem to be an adequate motive for the mass murder of hundreds of people.
Who says that crazy people need a good reason to do bad things?
Muzzies love to die and take as many infidels with them as they can
I figure our intelligence agencies know.
Sounds plausible. But I generally dont take anything the Atlantic publishes seriously. Marxists.
It is quite possible someone does know...but revealing that knowledge would expose a capability that is classified. Say some sources or methodology. There may be no clean way to drop any credible hint to steer the investigation so...they sit by and watch the world fumble along. Just a theory. It could be the pilot was a whack job and actually did pull off a murder suicide that baffles investigators.
When mental illness moves in, reason moves out.
“It is quite possible someone does know...but revealing that knowledge would expose a capability that is classified.”
What sort of capability related to the crash would be classified?
That is so true. The ends justify the means as we have witnessed many times.
Does CNN still care?
This explanation doesnt fit its agenda.
I kinda sorta understand suicide.
What I do not understand in the least is suicide that includes the intentional taking of many other lives.
The guy who wrote this is the son of Wolfgang Langwieshce who wrote probably the best book ever written about flying an airplane, Stick and Rudder.

There are lots of possibilities - heck that's just what I came up with off the top of my head before coffee. ;-) Obviously none are very likely, bordering on sci-fi, techno-thriller, mystery novel stuff.
Islam is a mental illness.
This wouldn’t be the first time. Remember Egypt Air 990?

Depression? On the same psych drugs as that German pilot?
Thanks for posting. Interesting.
