Iran is hurting badly from the sanctions and the inherent absurdities of the mullah regime. They are becoming increasingly desperate and frustrated. They are pushing the envelope with tanker attacks but so far have avoided an attack on American ships. The Europeans are terrified that a debilitating war will start and are not sure what actions if any China and Russia will take on behalf of their client Iran. The next step will be American warships escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz to maintain free navigation. The Arabs are demanding it. Logically the US should request other NATO ships to aid in the convoy duties. Somehow doubt the world will see German, French, British, Dutch, Italian ships going into harms way in the Persian Gulf.

This foreign entanglement has very dubious benefits for the security of the American people. Still if a request is made for NATO allies to provide ships and they refuse, it will be further proof to the American people that NATO has outlived its usefulness.

NATO is supposed to be a mutual defense treaty. Using it to push allies into supporting the enforcement of U.S. economic sanctions against Iran is just as ridiculous as using it to topple a Serbian government that posed no threat to any NATO members.
