President Donald Trump has the right goal in mind to settle ongoing trade issues with China, but his approach could have far-reaching consequences on the U.S. economy, Union Pacific CEO Lance Fritz told CNBC Tuesday.
Its time to hold the Beijings feet to the fire and push them to honor international trade standards of the World Trade Organization, yet tariffs on billions of dollars of imports from the country are hurting local economies, he added.

At all.
Bring back businesses, to America, Mr. President.
Now.
It depends.
If businesses in America rely on China’s manufacturing power, investments......
When President Trump mentions tariffs, it is usually the other country that starts having conniptions. This alone tells me who is “hurt” by tariffs.
As things stand now, the lack of fair trade hurts the US. It is hard to see how fixing this through tariffs is a loss for Americans.
In any case, all of these countries importing only our cash could one day realize that cash has to intrinsic value, and that they are really giving us cheap goods in return for nothing. Without a strong productivity base to give our currency value, it is worthless. And much of our production has been transferred to other countries.
I see this from a different angle. China kept the express train to a communist hell going while America yawned in a stupor.
So Jesus himself arranged with the Father to get the last man standing for a traditional America to say “when” to an arrogant China that was about to hit a budget wall on its socialist expenditures.
The less “religious” would call it karma. I call it God’s exquisite wisdom and timing.
I seem to recall reading that because of the tariff the Chinese have devalued their yen. If so, how does a tariff hurt if the price, in the end, is cheaper?
Typical media. Find some executive at some noteworthy company that is being temporarily inconvenienced by provisional tariffs. Get him to say something negative and then headline the story, “(Trump’s) Tariffs Hurt the Economy...”
You’re absolutely right, cba123, the premise IS bogus. I’ve been in the international trade game (import and export) for over 40 years and business has never been better.
Vive le Trump!
the amount of pain to the American economy will be directly proportional to the amount of foot dragging we allowed that brought us to this point in time.
Put yourself on sale often enough and you become another Venezuela.
If the most of it is that rich men become a little less rich, we can smile.
And I think that this will be the set of men who became rich out of high margins on Chinese goods. The Walmarts of the land won’t be quite as mighty in dollars. But they will regain in greatness.
