Students of Color are More Likely to Be Arrested in School (in NYC). That May Change.
New York Times ^ | June 20, 2019 | Eliza Shapiro

...

On Thursday, responding to longstanding concerns that the system penalizes black and Hispanic students, Mr. de Blasio announced new rules that will limit arrests in schools for low-level offenses.

In addition, it’s likely that the maximum amount of time for suspensions will be sharply reduced.

For decades, city statistics have shown that the New York City school system has disciplined black and Hispanic students at higher rates than white and Asian children — an unsettling yet consistent feature of the nation’s largest school district.

The new guidelines represent perhaps Mr. de Blasio’s most dramatic attempt to change how students of color are disciplined — and how police interact with students in school. All New York school buildings have a New York Police Department school safety agent, and other police officers are allowed in schools.

Ms. Colon said she went to Iowa to ask the mayor to eliminate all arrests and summonses in schools. Though she didn’t get the exact answer she hoped for, she said the changes are “a step in the right direction.”

Black and Hispanic students represent about 90 percent of arrests and summonses in schools, according to the New York Civil Liberties Union.

Though suspensions have plummeted by about 30 percent since Mr. de Blasio took office, 46 percent of total suspensions last year were issued to black students, who make up 26 percent of the school system.

After years of sometimes rocky experimentation with ways to replace former Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s so-called zero tolerance approach, the city will use restorative justice practices that emphasize defusing conflict over suspensions in all middle and high schools starting in the next school year. The city will add 85 new social workers, funded as part of the final city budget

They get arrested more because they misbehave more. Why are boys more likely than girls to be arrested? The same people who lament "segregation" in schools advocate school policies that cause white and Asian parents to flee schools with mostly black and Hispanic students.

Oh my, what led to last year’s horrible tragedy in Parkland (because the perp had a Hispanic name, he was dealt with very leniently). We just have to bring it to NYC. Even the writers for the 1974 movie “Death Wish” could not have scripted this any better.

The school system is now harboring and protecting criminals, a safe house. The school system is now everything that is NOT educating our children. It is time to dismantle

Isn’t this what happened in Broward County Florida? In order to reduce the number of arrests, they ignored infractions, resulting in a student who was never disciplined, never recognized as disturbed until he shot up the school.

Segregation in schools will just be replaced by segregation in ZIP codes; Asian parents in particular won’t send their children to education warehouses where they’ll learn nothing.

For decades, city statistics have shown that the New York City school system has disciplined black and Hispanic students at higher rates than white and Asian children — an unsettling yet consistent feature of the nation’s largest school district.

That is the symptom, not the problem. If you want to equalize those numbers, you have to fix the problem. Which is a dysfunctional culture that penalizes success. Simply letting kids get away with bad behavior in schools will only exacerbate the problem, increasing bad behavior and disrupting any learning that can actually happen.

I seriously think that liberals could benefit a lot by studying the Army problem solving method. It starts with accurately defining the root cause of the problem. If liberals knew any kind of problem solving ability at all, they would not come up with stupid ideas that are guaranteed to make the problem worse. But then, they also probably would not remain liberal.

Teachers unions throw their members under the bus.

Again.

Note to teachers: You get what you vote for, folks.

I’ve long called public schools open-air prisons, especially schools in cities.

Now they’re proving me right.

By the end of next year I expect to read headlines along the lines of “arrests are down but schools are more violent, officials struggle to understand why.”

If “students of color” (as opposed to those nasty, pasty, colorless white people, I suppose) commit more crimes, than more of them SHOULD be arrested.

What’s WITH these childish leftist idiots? In their weird, make-believe world if any given group has X percentage of the population, then that group should have X percentage of the jobs in ANY given field, be arrested X percent of the time, etc.

Their mania about this is pervasive. I heard on the news last week that only X percentage of females direct animated movies (GASP!), while celebrating the FIRST crippled, lesbian dwarf to win some meaningless award (as if those evil normals have been denying all of the other crippled, lesbian dwarfs for all these years!).

[Okay, I didn’t actually hear that last one on the news, but something similar].

My high school turned into one in the early 70’s when government forced busing upon us.

That’s also when the cops began patrolling the halls too.

That’s when I also witnessed Holder’s People’s beating the snot of my homeroom teacher.

Busing, only the government could think this a good thing. ...and no, not a Martha Steward good thing either.

Mr. De Blasio is buying votes.

What type of behavior do they expect they will get from all these fatherless homes?

They get arrested more because they misbehave more.

*GASP*

That has never occurred to them.

New headline:
“Students of Color are More Likely to Be Arrested in School (Because they commit more crime). Innocent Whites to be arrested to equalize the numbers.”

They will never admit the truth.
