Like the story of Galileo who was forced to recant his belief in the earth revolving around the sun, but mumbled under his breath, “But it does move”.
It is a mental illness. They can deny it and apologize for it. But it is what it is.
The headline of this story should read:
"LBGTQ community forces US psychoanalysts to recant re: labeling homosexuality a mental illness."
That's a nice -- and very popular -- story. The problem with it is that Galileo was never forced to recant his belief in the earth revolving around the sun, nor did he mumble under his breath, But it does move.
Galileo's "crime" was in teaching a then unproven theory as fact. He was free to advance his theory, but the rules were strict: only proven facts could be taught as facts. This was to prevent crackpot theories such as the current anthropogenic global warming hoax from being foisted upon the public. The eventual proof of a heliocentric solar system was to come later, so it was at the time only a theory. Galileo insisted on ignoring the rules, and the authorities at first ignored his transgressions. Unfortunately, Galileo was a first class jerk and personally insulted the authorities, up to and including the Pope.
Galileo was never tortured or imprisoned. He was under house arrest in one of his luxury apartments, with all his equipment, where he was allowed to continue his research.
