North Korean leader Kim Jong Un received a "personal letter" from President Donald Trump, according to North Korean state news agency KCNA.
KCNA reported that Kim "said with satisfaction that the letter is of excellent content," after reading it.
"Kim Jong Un said that he would seriously contemplate the serious content" and appreciated the "extraordinary courage of President Trump," KCNA added.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I just watched a dvd of Macarthur with Gregory Peck.
It makes you hate Truman and his missed chances to fight the Chinese and to end the “police action” and stalemate “conflict”. It hasn’t ended yet in 2019.

Kim was just a kid when he became “chairman”, had a taste of western life during his school years, and might just wish that he could experience that life again. I think Trump is keenly aware of this, and is also aware that every time Kim gets tempted to soften NK’s stance the hardliners intervene to talk him out of it (plus the likely influence of China to do the same). Trump is trying to turn him against the hardliners with visions of what could be.
Given the inability of previous presidents to make any headway, this approach is at least worth a shot.

Trump is sending a nice letter to NK, explaining things, but as you point out, we are squeezing NK, to encourage them to come to their senses, which will be better for everyone.
Trumps playing this entire thing well....between North and South Korea especially. He ‘set’ their tables.
The amount is actually 50 thousand tons of rice. Read that article you linked. The population of North Korea is ~ 25 million. 50 million tons would be two tons per person. The actual amount is more like four pounds per person.
