South Bend’s police union accuses Mayor Pete Buttigieg of playing politics with the shooting of Eric Logan and “driving a wedge” between officers and residents.
In a release late Monday, the South Bend Fraternal Order of Police said it supports Sgt. Ryan O’Neill, the officer who fatally shot Logan in the parking lot of Central High Apartments on June 16. Police have said Logan was breaking into cars and approached O’Neill with a knife.
The statement says the actions of Buttigieg, who is running for president, have been divisive and “solely for his political gain and not for the health of the city he serves.”
The mayor’s focus on Logan’s family, the FOP says, has ostracized others, including the families involved in shootings over the weekend or the family of O’Neill, “all of whom are suffering greatly.”
“Mayor Buttigieg has in no way unified the community,” the statement says.

All he had to say is that he is not commenting until the facts come in, then he should have met with the police department internally. Then held a press conference and say the rule of law must be upheld and sided with the officers. The loser who got killed WAS FRICKING CRIMINAL SCUM.
That would have endeared him to undecided and moderate voters, and it would have also put another nail in the Black Lives Matter movement, who aren't going to support him anyway.

Tough spot for the mayor to be in. Yeah, he’s gay. Yeah, he’s a liberal. But I do not sense in any way he relishes the sad conditions attendant to a constituency that is partly, but not largely, clueless and lawless. At some point the larger population needs to address anomalies cordially and with respect. This incident is an anomaly not a pattern, and most people in South Bend know that.
Anomaly: approaching a police officer with a knife and not yielding to commands.
Anomaly: shooting a civilian, whether innocent or guilty.
Just saying, this does not happen every day, everywhere, just like most men know where there mayor peter belongs most of the time.
