President Trump dismissed the youngest candidate in the Democratic field by comparing him to a caricature created decades before Pete Buttigieg was even born.
“Alfred E. Neuman cannot become president of the United States,” Trump said when asked by Politico what he thought of Buttigieg, the 37-year-old mayor of South Bend, Ind. The reference to the gaptoothed, big-eared boy made famous as a mascot for Mad magazine did just as much to show Trump’s age as Buttigieg’s.
The magazine used the illustration on its cover back in 1956 as a write-in candidate for president. While fairly ubiquitous in pop culture, the popularity of the cartoon and the magazine peaked in the 1970s.
Buttigieg, asked about the president’s swipe, admitted to not knowing the reference and trolled the president right back.
"I’ll be honest. I had to Google that,” Buttigieg told reporters Friday. “I guess it’s just a generational thing. I didn’t get the reference. It’s kind of funny, I guess.”
Mad magazine, whose Twitter bio is: “STILL IN PRINT,” in return trolled Buttigieg for not knowing the cartoon. “Who’s Pete Buttigieg? Must be a generational thing,” the magazine tweeted early Saturday morning.

Mad Magazine used to be a big favorite of mine in the 1960s. Past 2 years they put an upside down MAGA hat in the hands of Neuman just vomited into it on the cover. And issues with other slurs. Low level “humor” from these hate-mongers.

I only see it at one of the few surviving print bookstores as I walk past the slanderous Nation,Mother Jones, Newsweek,Atlantic and other total trash sheets.
I don’t know when Hugh Hewitt posted his message about the uncanny resemblance but it was immediately apparent to me the first time I saw him and I posted a link to the Alfred E. Newman web page along with my comment. Standing next to the 6’3” President Trump on the debate podium would make Pete look even more ridiculous. Fortunately, he will be long gone by the time the election gets to those debates.
True enough. It was so back in the 1960s, as well. I’m guessing it was funnier back then. But Alfred E. Neumann remains a cultural icon for the ages.

Mad Magazine had a prescient 1960 or 1961 satire on future evolution if trends continued. One was the new invention the “transistor radio” and teenagers had them on up to their ear or with an ear plug all the time.
Their future evolution prediction was the ear growing over the now built-in radio to hear stuff all the time. Enough to turn your tooth blue I guess.
