4 Takeaways From the Trump-Kim Meeting at the DMZ
NYT ^ | 30 June 2019 | Yonette Joseph

When President Trump sent a Twitter invitation on Friday to North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, to meet at the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone separating the Koreas — “just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!” — both men had much to gain, and more to lose.

If Mr. Kim did not attend, even though his side had seemed intrigued, it would have embarrassed Mr. Trump and opened him up to more criticism for his unpredictable diplomacy. It would also have compounded the dramatic failure of their summit in Hanoi, Vietnam, which Mr. Trump abruptly called off in February. . . .

He bought it with gazillions of dollars paid to Iran.

2. This was more than a handshake.

I think there was a personal message that Trump wanted to pass that he couldn't take the chance of having intercepted by anyone.

The MSM is unanimous in their condemnation of PDJT’s methods since he has disrupted the status quo among the chattering class and Foggy Bottom. But given State’s involvement in Russiagate I don’t blame him for not involving them or others.

I was surprised at how well Kim spoke English. Hadn’t heard him speak directly before.

He received it in 2009 8-1/2 months in office, without accomplishing anything:

Bad analogy.

Nixon in China was not good and we still are dealing with its bad consequences.

They didn’t include President Moon and the SK media took it as an insult. Their coverage was very positive until then.

Nixon's move with China and the changes since have been disastrous. We have enabled them to suck up our industry, send Chinese to the US to be spies, and China has modernized their military with profits from US trade and stolen intellectual property. Nothing good came of the move with China. Reagan gave us equally bad results by giving amnesty to Mexicans and others. Look at the disaster since.

Trump does not deserve to be compared with either. He might sell us out, but let's wait and see.

Didn’t Reagan open the doors to USSR also?

In a manner of speaking, yes. He knocked their wall down.

"...still trying to figure out what O’Dingelberry got the Nobel prize for."

Apparently the Nobel hierarchy agree with former Vice Predator, Joe Biden. That a 'clean, bright, well-spoken' black man is something for the storybooks.

God help us all.

I’m still trying to figure out what O’Dingelberry got the Nobel prize for.

Now, there's an award winning comment. We should have a daily 'Thread Winner' thread. I'd nominate that comment.

By the way - we're all wondering the same thing about Zero's Nobel prize. I think it was a participation trophy.
