The Russian Navy’s new special mission submarine, K-329 Belgorod, has returned to the construction hall. The submarine is expected to start sea trials soon so this may be a temporary measure to inspect the hull. Or it may indicate a larger problem preventing her from starting the trials. Right now it is too soon to say.

She was spotted moved from her usual berth, where she has been since being launched in April 2019, by Twitter user @OSINT_1. Analysis of Sentinel-2 satellite imagery shows that she moved between 25th and 29th April. As-of 29th she was still in the floating dock used to transfer vessels to the construction halls.

The Russian Navy’s latest ‘Special Mission’ submarine, K-329 Belgorod, has put to sea for the first time. Open source intelligence seen by Naval News indicates that the submarine left Severodvinsk on June 25 2021. This represents the start of sea trials which are critical to the delivery of the new boat to the Russian Navy.

Although detailed specifications have not been revealed it is clear that Belgorod is the largest submarine to be built for 30 years. In fact the only submarine type which is larger is the Typhoon Class. Her enlarged Oscar-II class submarine hull is estimated to be 178 meters (584 feet) long and about 15 meters (49 feet) across. Her displacement will likely be significantly more than the ~19,000 tons of the Oscar-II class on which she is based. This is bigger in every respect than the largest Western submarine, the U.S. Navy’s Ohio Clas.

STRATEGY for the Development of Maritime Activities of the Russian Federation until 2030

30 August 2019

This document is not a strategy in the sense that western strategy writers well-versed
in an “ends-ways-means” approach might recognize. Rather, it presents an assessment of the challenges that Russia must overcome in order to achieve the goals laid out in the earlier documents. It also outlines measures to assess Russian progress in overcoming these challenges. While this Strategy builds on the concepts and goals outlined in the previous publications, it differs from them in that it examines where the impediments lie.

For example, it identifies specific shortcomings, especially regarding what it sees as an insufficient industrial base, an outdated civilian nuclear fleet, low levels of maritime transportation, and the poor state of the civilian fishing fleet and associated infrastructure.
Finally, the strategy also provides a list of indicators that can assist with assessments of how effectively Moscow is achieving its maritime goals.

A segment aired on Russia-1, a state-owned TV channel, appears to be aimed at a British audience. The video amounts to a threat, showing how the Poseidon nuclear-armed torpedo could be used to destroy Britain. Wipe if off the map, if the graphic is to be believed.

Poseidon is to be taken very seriously. But this video should not. It contains errors and repeats unsubstantiated claims and hyperbole.

White Sea PRIP and NOTAM. PRIP says artillery shooting, and NOTAM goes to FL05, but this is a fairly large area.

It is possible this is for some kind of test activity, despite being labeled something else.

Next window above is OCT 11 - 12

new:
New NOTAM west of Novaya Zemlya. Dates are October 11-14 (full text below). Not sure what it may be, but test launch of Poseidon/Status-6 is one theory. There was a similar NOTAM on September 8-9, but no such activity was reported then. K-329 Belgorod went to sea a few days ago.

Satellite imagery has revealed activity at the Pankovo missile test site on Novaya Zamyla, an archipelago in northern Russia. Pankovo is one of at least three sites associated with Russia's nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed cruise missile, Burevestnik (RS-SSC-X-09 Skyfall). Two Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) warnings were issued around Novaya Zamyla between 31 August and 5 September 2022,

Probably, from October 26 to 29, the exercises of the strategic nuclear forces of the Russian Federation will be held. NOTAM’s were issued for ICBM launches from Plesetsk and SLBMs from the coast of the Kola Peninsula to the Kura missile range.

Cruise missiles are expected to be launched in the area from Amderma airfield to Pemboy.

NOTAM’s: X0312/22, X0313/22, X0314/22, P8604/22, P8804/22, X0226/22, Z7365/22

A nice map showing the expected SLBM(s) from the Barents, and ICBM(s) from Plesetsk, to Kura, for the live-fire part of Grom.

Grom is a normal Russian exercise, held annually, but these aren't normal times. Expect Russia to exploit this for fear-mongering propaganda.

Russia possibly tried and failed to test ‘apocalypse’ Poseidon nuclear torpedo

The apparently botched exercise took place in the Arctic Sea in recent weeks and involved Russia’s behemoth Belgorod nuclear submarine, a senior US official told CNN.

Over the past week, Belgorod and other Russian ships were spotted leaving the testing area without carrying out a test, suggesting that the Kremlin’s navy had run into some technical issues that caused it to pull the plug on the torpedo launch.

Restoration of the special purpose submarine “Losharik” will be completed in 2024

Restoration and repair of the AS-31 Losharik special-purpose nuclear submarine (NPS), which suffered from a fire, is scheduled to be completed in 2024. It is reported by TASS with reference to a source. It is noted that the fire did not affect the titanium hull of the submarine, so the submarine will be able to dive to the previous maximum depth. According to the data received, a new reactor core was loaded onto the nuclear submarine, and new equipment was installed to replace the destroyed or damaged by fire. After the repair work is completed, next year it is planned to test the submarine.

Earlier, the Public News Service wrote that a new submarine Velikie Luki was solemnly launched in St. Petersburg .

The commander of the submarine, captain 3rd rank Artem Gavrilov said that the future crew of the submarine is being trained to operate weapons and technical equipment. According to him, all tasks for the development of materiel will be completed in full.

In other words it will never be in operation.

Dr Sidharth Kaushal, RUSI:

Stalking the Seabed: How Russia Targets Critical Undersea Infrastructure

The recent disclosure of Russian naval activity in the vicinity of key maritime infrastructure in the North Sea including cables, windfarms and pipelines should not necessarily come as a surprise. Russia has spent a considerable amount of effort investing in capabilities that would allow it to pose a threat to European critical infrastructure, and has viewed this as an imperative since the Soviet era.

Russian Seabed Warfare: An Intelligence Function, not a Naval One

The task of maritime special operations is spread across different organisations within the Russian system, including the Russian Navy and the Main Directorate for Deep Sea Research (GUGI). These organisations field somewhat different capabilities and likely own different aspects of the function of maritime sabotage. Notably, however, although the Russian Navy plays a key operational role, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the GRU – Russia's foreign military intelligence agency – appear to control activity in organisational terms, both through the GUGI and the Russian Naval Staff's Intelligence Directorate.

In addition, the GUGI operates surface vessels that nominally act as research vessels to gather intelligence. These include the Yantar, which received attention for activity around sensitive cables near the UK in 2019. The vessel is equipped with a variety of sensors and appears capable of acting as a host vessel for the Pr18610 – a three-man deep-diving submersible capable of operating at depths of 20,000 feet. In addition, the vessel likely hosts a range of remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles.

The organisation is tasked with the emplacement of sensors associated with Russia's Harmony network, surveillance of foreign assets in Russian waters, and the removal of foreign surveillance assets, including taps on wires. In addition, the Belgorod will apparently host a part of the Russian nuclear arsenal in the form of the Poseidon nuclear torpedo.

The recently revealed use of civilian vessels to survey wind farms in the North Sea suggests that this practice has been continued and is likely a task of the Navy rather than the GUGI. The Spetsnaz units controlled by regional fleets can be inserted into theatre using a range of mechanisms such as swimmer delivery vehicles, and can be used for both surveillance and covert operations against military and civilian targets. The Northern Fleet's Spetsnaz have trained for operations against SOSUS, and those of the Baltic Fleet have allegedly been involved in covert sabotage. Like all Spetsnaz, these units are under the ultimate control of the GRU.

The 1884 Cable Convention, to which Russia is a signatory, allows navies to board and search ships in international waters if they believe them to be tampering with undersea cables – a right the US has exercised. Similarly, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) allows countries to constrain the activities of civilian vessels conducting surveillance relevant to economic exploitation within their exclusive economic zones (EEZs) – and most of these activities overlap substantially with the sort of surveillance a ship would need to do to survey infrastructure. In the Baltic and North Seas, which are almost entirely straddled by Western EEZs, this could be a basis for significantly limiting the freedom of action of Russian auxiliary ships while remaining within international law.
