CNN's Fareed Zakaria: Guys, Trump is Right About the Asylum Abuse Crisis on the Southern Border
Townhall.com ^ | July 3, 2019 | Katie Pavlich

The situation on the U.S. southern border with Mexico continues to deteriorate as hundreds of thousands of Central Americans falsely claim asylum, overwhelming Border Patrol and HHS facilities.

But while most Democrats are still sitting by with complaints and false accusations instead of solutions, others are finally admitting a crisis exists.

CNN's Fareed Zakaria is one of them, who took time on his show this week to detail how the current asylum system is being gamed at devastating levels.

"It pains me to say this but he [President Trump] is right that the United States faces a crisis with its asylum system," he said. "Since 2014, the flow of asylum seekers in to the United States has skyrocketed. Last year immigration courts received 162,00 asylum claims, a 240 percent increase since 2014. The result is a staggering backlog with more than 300,000 claims pending and the average immigration case has been pending on average for more than 700 days."

"It's also clear the rules surrounding asylum are vague, lax and being gamed," he continued. "Some applicants for asylum have suspiciously similar stories, using identical phrases. Many simply use the system to enter the U.S. and then melt into the shadows or gain a work permit. Asylum is meant to be granted to a very small amount of people in extreme circumstances, not as a substitute for the process of immigration itself."

Zakaria pointed out the initial standard for asylum is far too broad and that while the murder rate in Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala has been cut in half, thousands of migrants are falsely claiming asylum due to "violence."

"Hundreds of millions of people who live around the world in poor, unstable regions where threats of violence abound, could easily apply for asylum. Do they all have a legal right to enter the U.S. through a back door? By passing the normal immigration process?" he asked. "The criteria for asylum need to be rewritten and substantially tightened...people should not be able to use asylum claims as a way to work in America."

The US faces a real crisis with its asylum system. My take:

Zakaria is spot on and it's time for Congress to act.

reminds me of the little boy that says, “no, sir, Daddy!!” when asked if he had been playing with fire (as the cuff of his britches are smoldering). Some things become rather obvious after a while.

a 240 percent increase since 2014.

Interesting. Back in 2012 or 2013 - I don't recall exactly which year but I know it was that time frame because of where I was working - I was flipping through some congressional reports. The cube next to mine used to be the dumping ground for the bound committee reports both for the bills and the final passed acts (both authorization and appropriation). I liked to look through them because you could find all kinds of weird and random new laws tucked among the defense items.

In one of them, I found an interesting new budget item...funds and direction to send delegations down to assorted Central American countries to explain to people about how the American social welfare system worked.

At the time, I thought that was very strange so it stayed with me. I'm kicking myself for not going to the copier and making a copy of that page because I would have no idea where to find it in the thousands upon thousands of pages that congress produces in their never ending quest to destroy the country and enslave us all in The Law.

It came to my mind again towards the end of Obama's administration when I heard him say in a speech that "anyone should be able to come into this country and vote."

This actually IS a manufactured crisis - and it was carefully manufactured years ago. It was all going to plan and then...Trump! That is part of the reason for the 24/7 shrieking and hate from the left since he took office.

Why should we give him credit for stating what is as obvious as the nose on the front of my face.

On top of that, he taints the statement by saying.... “it pains me to say the President is right”. This is an outright admission that it is the messenger and not the truth of the message.

CNN has been thoroughly absorbed into a cult of personality, not news. It started prior to Clinton, became much more pronounced during the Clinton years, they bashed Bush non-stop in subtle ways, they openly loved Obama, loved Hillary, and now they openly hate Trump in a visceral way I have never witnessed in media.

They equate Trump to Hitler or Stalin without a single fact to support such a claim. CNN has destroyed themselves for a generation. MSNBC has done the same along with the NYT and many other “giants” of the news media. They have become my enemy and should be the enemy of every truth-loving American.

This problem did not begin with Trump, but like so many other problems his is the first administration to try and take it on directly instead of kicking the can down the road. I truly hope the democrats pay a horrible price for this in 2020.

If they do, I have increased hope for our future. If they do not, we are a nation full of blatant ignorance and will not last long as a republic. Much of this ignorance stems from the lies of the enemedia - like CNN.

Wish there was a way Trump could read your comment... or that there was something like a free press that wasn't run by democrat whores - some group that could expose what scams Congress is pushing through in exchange for 'favors'...

I also heard of this demographic move being put in place years ago...but like you I thought it was too over the top to be real...

Do you think maybe because he’s not only telling the truth but admits President Trump is right.

It’s a small step in the right direction for a leftist.

Why should or would it “pain him” to admit that the President pointed out something so obvious?

I concede that it is nice to see one person at CNN admit the obvious, but that is a very low bar. It was far more consequential to me that he admitted that it “pained him”. Why? He just admitted openly what we all know to be true - they are not interested in truth. They are only interested in promoting hatred of Trump and they will ignore data to craft their message to the point it “pains them” to admit a simple objective fact when it does not lend itself to attacking the President.

The record might be found with a search at govinfo.gov, using “advanced” search. Narrow down the year, the originating office, and search terms.
I tried “central america” AND “social services” AND “delegation”, but unfortunately couldn’t find a likely result.

It pains me to say this but I have to agree with Fareed Zakaria for ONCE.

Because PRESIDENT Trump is correct.

Well if you're trying to destroy America and turn it into a 3rd-world country during your pResidency, it all makes sense...especially if you're an anti-American NWO Globalist.

No, he is spouting the new talking points. Polling has shown that this is a loser issue so they have to change the way they talk about it. The new talking point is that PDJT has not presented a plan to fix it.It’s all his fault, don’t ya know.

I’ve tried - but I just don’t remember the exact year, committee or even if it was house or senate or conference report. And it was worded very carefully but the intent was totally clear and while there was no context for it at the time, it disturbed me greatly.

worded very carefully

I can imagine the staff lawyers for projects like that would use weasel words and couch their language so it can't be readily determined what they're up to. 'Probably why it's not readily found in searches.
