University leaders in Alaska are scrambling to prepare for a 41 percent cut in state funding and mobilizing a last-ditch lobbying effort to try to persuade legislators to overturn the governor’s decision.

“Simply put, if not overridden, today’s veto will strike an institutional and reputational blow from which we may likely never recover,” University of Alaska System President James R. Johnsen said in a statement following a Board of Regents emergency meeting after Gov. Mike Dunleavy (R) used a line-item veto Friday.

Could this be the beginning of the end of “Big Education?”

Quick! Cut all the STEM departments and tenured professors, leaving only adminstrators, diversity coordinators, and adjuncts!

Maybe they need to cut costs. I think Hillary would say something like this: If you can’t compete, maybe you should go out of business.

So start offering courses that actually teach and don’t indoctrinate.

It’s a drag when oil royalty revenues are down.

In remote, thinly populated states one has to question a bunch of “outlying campuses”. The rural based students need to come to one central campus, pay room and board (which could be assisted by the state), just as was common in the west during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

This is Alaska, not New Jersey. So I don’t think that is happening here.

Who needs a college diploma in Alaska?

I mean really...almost 50% of the active pilots in Alaska actually have pilot licenses.

A man (woman) can accomplish ALOT without a college degree.

The regents and bureaucrats may have to [gasp] drink domestic champagne! And rent second-rate hookers instead of importing the top-tier gals from Vegas.

Oh, the humanity!

“today’s veto will strike an institutional and reputational blow from which we may likely never recover”

“may likely”?

Send ‘em down South for college. Looks like Alaska’s Administrators can’t use English properly.

Universities are mostly administered by leftist nitwits and students are LIBtards. Defund this malignancy.

Perhaps tis will be the stimulus to make all general education subjects taught online. Students could take these off campus, and then take the tests to pass to the next subject.

Actually many subjects could be taught on line: English, history, psychology, philosophy, etc.

Actually all major universities should be restructured into 2 areas of interest: STEM and all else.

Phys Ed needs restructuring too. It should include participation in school teams - treat it as a vocational type of subject. There is no need to force some excellent athletes into English composition, for example, when the student is obviously there on a scholarship as a pathway to professional sports.

Last, now is the time to reevaluate the Title IX requirements. Having equal number of teams for men and for women is idiotic. Woken are mostly interested in basketball, volleyball, softball gymnastics, track, etc. Danceline is not a sport - rather more of a performing art subject.

Well, where else can youngsters go to get their certificates in Degenerate Sexual Experimentation and Advanced Binge Drinking?

That *is* what college is for!

Or live at home and take courses on-line. The University of Maine, Augusta was one of the pioneers of on-line learning including live TV broadcasts to dozens of sites in Maine.
I taught a full year economics courses at one location with ten students but another ten were located at two other sites a couple hours a way.

The University of Alaska is pretty reliably anti-Second Amendment.

This is encouraging.

I have been amazed at the power Universities wield at the state level.
