Now Biden apologizes? (re: segregation)
WaPo ^

Posted on 07/07/2019 11:19:53 AM PDT by TigerClaws

For days before his first debate on June 27 and for more than a week after, former vice president Joe Biden declined to “atone,” as he put it, for speaking about the days when “civility” allowed him to work with avowed segregationists in the Senate. The debate only added to his problems when Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) put him on defense for having opposed busing in the 1970s, although neither favors mandatory busing today.

Then, just as questions were raised as to what Harris was actually complaining about if they no longer disagreed on busing, Biden took an unexpected turn and apologized at a campaign stop in South Carolina, a state where the African American vote is absolutely critical in the primary contest.

“I do believe we have work to do, even with those who we find repugnant, to make our system of government to work for all of us. I believe then and I believe now, and I know it can be done without compromising on our principles.” Then came the pivot: “Now — was I wrong a few weeks ago to give the impression that somehow, I was praising those men who I successfully opposed time and again? Yes — I was. I regret it, and I am sorry for any of the pain or misconception I may have caused anybody.” Then defensively he asked, “Should that misstep define 50 years of my record for fighting for civil rights, racial justice in this country? I hope not, I don’t think so.” He added a bit more aggressively, “That just isn’t an honest assessment of my record. I’m going to let my record and my character stand for itself and not be distorted or smeared.”

He’s still avoiding saying he was wrong about forced bussing. Or right. It’s a non apology apology. “Sorry if you had hurt feelings though I did nothing wrong.”

How much longer before Joe Biden apologizes for being an ‘American citizen’?

I’m probably a minority opinion here, and while it’s good to see the liberals eat their own, I never understood the uproar over Joe Biden and work with segregationist senators.

I understood it to be, that Joe was saying he was able to work with them on some other issues, even though he was not in agreement with them on segregation.

And I thought he used them as an example of people he was at odds with politically, whom he was able to work with in spite of those political differences.

I thought it was a real stretch for someone to interpret all of that as “praising segregationists”. But again, let the liberals eat their own.

Maybe someone can explain this to me since I clearly don’t see why Joe was so wrong here.

So when the ‘ Rats “call for civility” what do they really mean?

Pathetic - Biden was right the first time - he managed to work with segregationists whom he might have disagreed with on that issue to find common ground on other items - only progressives seem to think that if you differ with someone on something, you have to hate them on everything - they don’t grasp that it’s easy to be civil and tolerant with someone you agree with - the real intellectual and emotional challenge comes in being civil and tolerant to those with whom you have differences - they’re too limited to be able to bring it off......

It takes several days to run the polls necessary for a democrat to determine which way the wind is blowing.

The modern democrat party does not work with anyone that they disagree with. All who refuse to follow the liberal orthodoxy must be destroyed. Not disagreed with. Not defeated. Destroyed.

Yep, that’s probably what’s going on here, take polls to see what your position should be.

I once heard, though never confirmed, that Bill Clinton took a poll to help decide where they should go on vacation. Who knew a presidential family vacation was such a sensitive topic as to need a poll to make a decision?

You can bet there are always polls being taken behind the scenes, but probably only a small number are reported publicly.

The problem is, the base of today’s Democrat Party has no concept of working together or politics stopping at the water’s edge.

Correct. The only one that doesn’t know that it’s over for Joe is Joe.

Much like Jeb! Boosh. But then Jeb! knew from the outset he really didn’t have a chance. He was just trying to block Donald Trump so “sister” Hillary could breeze in.

From link:

George Wallace was never a Republican.

George Wallace — who famously said in his inaugural address as Alabama governor, “Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever!” — ran for president as a Democrat in 1964 and 1972 ...

During his ’68 White House run, Wallace was endorsed by other segregationist Democrats...
