Robert Maxwell was a conman. On a grand scale. He built Maxwell Communications, seemingly a media empire but built on sand and scams.
He (almost certainly) committed suicide by jumping off his yacht in the middle of the night in the middle of the Mediterranean, just as the breadth of his ponzi scheme theft (think: Maddoff-style) was being uncovered. That is undoubtedly what caused him to choose to “exit” rather than have to face his crimes and lose face in public.
