Manhattan, Upper West Side Suffer Widespread Blackouts
Breitbart ^ | 13 July 2019 | Joshu Caplan

Parts of Manhattan and the Upper West Side experienced blackouts Saturday evening, leaving thousands without power, according to reports.

NBC New York, citing the Con Edison power outage map, reports over 44,000 customers are without power. “We are responding to extensive outages on the Westside of Manhattan. We will share more information as it comes in. Thank you,” the utility giant wrote on Twitter.

The Daily News reports:

Subway service was stalled in Manhattan and Queens on all the lines designated by letters, which the MTA calls its “B Division.”

“We’re trying to get people out of subways. We’re trying to get people out of elevators. It’s a big mess,” said an MTA source. Subway riders were walked through tunnels and led to the station at Columbus Circle, an MTA source said. An early unconfirmed report said there was a transformer fire at 12th Ave. around W. 54th St.

According to the NYPD, police are responding to possible blackouts plaguing the Columbus Circle subway station, while the FDNY has received reports about the outages and inoperable elevators.

Living where I do (DC Suburbs) power outages don’t bother us much; I’d much rather lose electricity than water.

But in a place like Manhattan, it would scare me.

Living where I do (fringe of Baltimore/Washington exurbs) with a well; losing electricity means losing water.

Yes, I have friends on wells who lose water; and they keep generators.

We lost water several times recently due to main breaks or new pipes being put in. The discomfort was much worse than just losing electricity has been.

Power is back!

I rode my scooter up to 77th st to get a bottle of wine and it was really strange with zero power south of 72nd.

I live in the exurbs of Knoxville, TN, about 22 miles west of downtown. I have an all house, full power replacement full auto generator. Nada problema. Enjoy yourselves, NYC.

For some reason, I always want to associate Ebinger’s ‘Blackout Cake’ with the 1965 blackout; but the name really goes back to WWII and blackout drills.

We’re trying to get people out of elevators.

No requirement for emergency generators?

No requirements old buildings to meet newer code?

Friends of the mayor?

My block in Queens had a blackout last Monday. It was awful, as it was a very warm and humid night and fans/ac were not available. It went on for 7 hours. Calling 911 at the first moment did no good; they just pawned me off to 311, the world's most useless phone number. They must recruit their telephone people from homeless shelters or people sitting on the curb, they are that nasty and dumb. 311 insisted I call Con Ed, the electric company, and transferred me to them. They were equally NASTY and unhelpful, insisting I call my night time maintenance staff. Did that, and they were obviously in over their heads. When it became light outside, I saw Con Ed trucks on the block. At very long last, the power came back on. The cause turned out to be a fire in a manhole; the cables had caught on fire from overuse.

I then had umpteen clocks, timers, etc. to reset, which was a pain in the behind. Still have a lingering problem with a couple of in-wall timers to iron out.

Blackouts are NOT FUN.

One small note: I find 311 very helpful.

It used to be that you would get shuffled from one city agency to another endlessly. I once ended up with the person I started with, and she laughed.

Was it Bloomberg? If so, he did something right, besides calling blackout curtains after 9/11 preposterous. Oh yes, and he once brought the right person with him to the ball drop on New Year’s Eve.

44,000 out of 8+ million people in Manhattan? That’s not “extensive”.
