Brexit: Bosses seek cut to immigrant salary threshold

The next prime minister should lower the salary threshold for foreign workers in the UK from £30,000 to £20,000, a group of business and education bodies has said.

They say that such a move would help to avoid "acute" skills shortages.

Currently any non-EU citizen working in the UK must earn at least £30,000, but under current proposals this will be extended to EU citizens after Brexit.

The Home Office said it was still consulting on the plans.

..."It is vital that the government does all it can to keep the country at full strength at a time of great uncertainty. The thousands of businesses we represent are clear that without a bold move now on immigration reform, the skills shortages many companies face risk becoming even more acute," said Jasmine Whitbread, chief executive at London First.

The coalition also called for more generous temporary and post-study work visas, following curbs in recent years to lower immigration.

"Without the ability to access international talent, many of our world-class sectors are at significant risk," they said in a letter to both prime ministerial candidates.

"As the UK prepares to leave the EU in the near future, it is imperative that the government puts in place measures that will avoid employers facing a cliff-edge in recruitment, and works towards building a successful economy that is open and attractive."

..The frontrunner to take over from Theresa May, Boris Johnson, has called for a new Australian-style points-based system.

..Both men also oppose the government's target of bringing net migration down to under 100,000 people a year, which has never been met.

According to the Migration Observatory, a think tank, the government is already issuing waivers to allow essential workers to bypass the £30,000 cut-off.

The next prime minister should lower the salary threshold for foreign workers in the UK from £30,000 to £20,000

Average annual earnings for a worker in the UK is around £26,000. The UK bosses want to import even cheaper foreign labor.

Every country seems to have a group of elites who just can’t stop themselves from relentlessly seeking to sell out their countrymen, at every opportunity.

Fixed it.

That is true somewhat in the UK - for jobs looking after the elderly etc.

They don’t “need” immigrant labor. They “want” immigrant labor.

Big difference.

What is really embarrassing is the fact that despite their open socialism wages are growing faster in UK than in the “free market” USA.

That’s probably because they have less skilled people. Hence the premium paid to those who qualify.

No, its because the Cheap Labor Express runs the Repuke-again Party and has set immigration policy for 30+ years in order to keep wags flat. H-1B IS A WAGE KILLER. The GOP is corrupt and has been bought off by the globalists.

Yes, I follow. Imported labor does it for cheaper but how does this jive with England’s higher wages? They import hordes and it seems they even put caps on what imports can make. Although, I guess this could push native wages higher if companies couldn’t get what they needed from the lower value imports. - because their wages are kept artificially low.
I think I’m following at least. There seems to be cultural differences that could account for the disparities too.

In the case of the UK, this depends:
1. the high-end, high-tech and research areas - they do need people that are at times unavailable in the UK. This isn’t the case here (where you’re tlaking about the threshold being lowered

2. the low-end - these are the target here, for people looking after old-timers, EMTs down to fruit pickers. For the nurses and EMTs, in general the locals do not want the former job, no matter the salaries offered. EMTs there are many Brits as well, but not enough, again, salaries are high.
Then fruit-pickers, packers etc - these are dirty jobs that people do not want to do AND the salaries are low. Raise them higher? Then the costs go up the production chain - I think it’s doable though

If the stupid supporters of the NHS fixed THAT quango organization, they’d have enough nurses and doctors to fill jobs. As it is, they’re forced to see so many patients they can’t keep up and burn out. They’re also paid pretty poorly by medical standards, while the “administrators” who run the whole Ponzi scheme make hundreds of thousands.
