Trump Has Regrets: The ‘send her back’ chant at his rally was an ugly political moment.

Donald Trump rarely admits a mistake, much less an overstatement, so we’ll take the regret he expressed Thursday at the chant of “send her back” during his Wednesday rally as the moral equivalent of an apology. Let’s hope his supporters get the message, and that Mr. Trump stops egging them on.

The crowd in North Carolina broke into chants of “send her back” after Mr. Trump lambasted Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar for hating America. Mr. Trump had used the words “go back” in a tweet earlier in the week, and the crowd’s chant shows how easily an ill-thought presidential comment can inspire ugly expressions of mass psychology.

The best that can be said is that the chant echoed the 2016 calls of “lock her up” regarding Hillary Clinton, and it may have begun in that raucous partisan spirit. But Wednesday’s chant was meaner in targeting Ms. Omar not merely for what she has said but as a naturalized citizen who should be banished from the U.S. The impulse is raw nativism.

Mr. Trump isn’t the first President to indulge in such group-targeted demagoguery. FDR railed in his 1932 campaign against “the Ishmaels and the Insulls, whose hand is against every man’s.” That was an anti-Semitic jibe against disgraced Chicago utilities magnate Samuel Insull, and the press corps at the time cheered Roosevelt on.

This time the chant was widely denounced, and not merely by the anti-Trump chorus. Mark Walker, a North Carolina Republican who was at the rally, tweeted afterward: “Though it was brief, I struggled with the ‘send her back’ chant tonight referencing Rep. Omar. Her history, words & actions reveal her great disdain for both America & Israel. That should be our focus and not phrasing that’s painful to our friends in the minority communities.”

Neither had any real impacts. Both were classic mob tactics of the left.
I would bet my life, both were started by a dem plant.
Now both will be used incessantly targetting swing voters.
With google n big tech colluding against us, we don’t need to be classless like the dems.

I wouldn't sweat the "Send-Her-Back" chant.

Americans have become accustomed to the three syllable chant ever since "U-S-A" became popular.

President Trump only suggested that they voluntarily go back to their ethnic homelands to fix problems there, and come back and tell us how they did it.

"Send her back" implies a government that forcibly deports people, which is legal after all reasonable due process. Trump was not suggesting forcible removal.

“A lot of people on the right have known about it for months.”

Yes. Those “lot of people” would be us — wonks who pay attention to what’s going on in the background. Other people are just learning about it.

“I suspect Trump knows exactly what the situation is”

Oh, yeah. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t have chimed in on the subject.

She is more useful where she is.

She likelihood of her being stripped of her seat before an election, and then summarily exiled, is too small to fixate on as a “goal”.

I want her, and the other 3 loon nuts, right where they are, and with microphones on them 24/7, making the Dems miserable and off-foot.

All he said was that it didn’t start with him and that he started speaking quickly to get past the chanting as he was “happy with it, I disagreed with it.” He had spoken against Omar and the crowd responded spontaneously. What he didn’t do was to admonish the crowd.

Oh, that poor, poor little girl.

Just sitting there in the school lunchroom, eating her lunch.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

She can dish it out, but she can’t take it?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

She married her brother.

Not a real paragon of virtue.

Samuel Insull wasn’t Jewish. He was, however, guilty of excessive optimism (like most everybody in the late 1920s) and of bypassing New York finance via direct stock sales of his companies to the public—which made the 1932 collapse of his holding company (at Wall Street’s instigation) a bit painful to all concerned.

Shows all they know....

So, technically, they should have chanted, “Send her back after she is convicted of document fraud.” They obviously believed that the evidence to convict her is there. Classic case of finding a hair-splitting error and then piling on

“Whaaaa pearl clutcher. “

LOL! You are seriously still trying to turn this around on me?

Yeah, you realized how stupid you and these other actual “pearl clutchers” are looking, so now you are trying to “tough guy” you way out.

LOL! It isnt working, but maybe you got the point that this dumb thing isnt a real issue. First steps.

And yes, after 2024, the GOP can sink or swim.

I regret the Media’s and your (Wall Street Journal) reaction.

If people would research what the media DOES NOT REPORT, things would be different.

The Journal along with some/few republicans have no GUTS, no COURAGE to just tell the truth.

Somehow I think someone will amplify that point re. being here legally....

The Crowd, or a cleverly worded tweet from the Donald forcing the Dems and MSM to investigate the way they would pounce on any Republican if there was whiff of impropriety.

The more we watch this cycle draw out the more we see how twisted the media is, and playing the audience for fools as all they are really worried about is viewership, clicks, and prolonged drama and not the real truth...

MSM has become real tabloid journalism.

Just an imprudent big mouth and the usual shooting from the hip on Twitter in the middle of the freaking night is actually the problem and he has tactically only himself to blame. I’ve long since felt his general lack of self control with his postings and such is going to be his undoing—and his aides must be going absolute nutso.

This isn't about the tweets. For the past couple of days, there has been a surge of support and popularity for Trump because of the tweets. the tweets forced Pelosi to defend the gang of four right at a time she was trying to distance herself from them.

The problem is that in rejecting what his followers were chanting, Trump is seemingly apologizing for the whole thing now. IMO, he should not have expressed any regrets at all.
