The school suggests using “U.S. citizen” or “person from the U.S.” as substitutes.

I’d suggest the term “person of U.S.”.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with US Citizen. You are an American and US Citizen, as am I. Unless you are from Canada or Mexico, but these two countries, and there are actually more of them are in North American Continent

I suggest saying America and any repercussions from that should result in a very large lawsuit against the school. Isn’t this the school Ward Churchill taught at?
